A fine summit in its own right, and has an interesting ridge route for winter climbers.

It is difficult for children under 13 years or 1.50m to cross the bridge because their arms are eventually too short to hold on to both ropes. But you can cross the two streams 50-100m upstream in shallower places if you take off your shoes and roll up your trousers.

I love walking down through the Nevis Gorge after. It is lovely easy walking after the wild upper reaches of the glen. I never tire of it.

I first crossed this three wire bridge over fifty years ago and it hasn’t really changed since. I have no idea how many times I have crossed it but it is always fun. I always enjoy watching visitors wrestling with their first traverse. Fortunately few fall in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the Glen Coe area?

Yes, the Glencoe Lochan Trail is a great option for families and those looking for a gentle walk. It offers several easy paths around a tranquil lake, set within a peaceful woodland. The trails are well-maintained and provide beautiful scenery without any strenuous climbing.

Where can I find a good hike to a waterfall?

For a classic waterfall hike, the trail to Steall Falls is a fantastic choice. This moderate walk through Glen Nevis leads you to Scotland's second-highest waterfall, a spectacular 120-meter cascade. The path involves some rocky sections but rewards you with incredible views in the gorge.

How difficult is the main path up Ben Nevis and how long does it take?

The Ben Nevis Mountain Track is a strenuous and challenging full-day hike, typically taking 7–9 hours to complete the 10.1-mile (16.3 km) round trip. While it's not a technical climb, it involves a sustained ascent of over 1,300 meters and requires a good level of fitness and proper preparation for mountain weather.

What are some of the best viewpoints for photos in Glen Coe?

Glen Coe is full of iconic photo spots. The Three Sisters viewpoint, directly accessible from the A82 road, offers a magnificent panorama of the valley's dramatic peaks. For a view earned by a short hike, the walk to Signal Rock provides a lovely perspective from within the woods, looking out into the glen.

Are there any good circular hikes in Glen Coe?

Yes, the loop up The Pap of Glencoe is a popular choice. It's a moderately challenging route that provides outstanding 360-degree views over Loch Leven and the surrounding mountains. The circular nature of the trail means you get to enjoy varied scenery on your ascent and descent.

I'm an experienced hiker looking for a serious challenge. What do you recommend?

For a demanding day with rewarding ridge walking, the Bidean nam Bian and Stob Coire Sgreamhach loop is an excellent choice. This is a difficult mountain route that takes you to the highest peak in Glen Coe, involving steep ascents and some scrambling. It's a true classic for seasoned mountaineers.

Can I bring my dog on hikes in Ben Nevis and Glen Coe?

Dogs are common on many lower-level trails, but you must keep them on a lead, especially near livestock or on private land like the area around Signal Rock. For high mountain routes like Ben Nevis, only bring a dog if it is extremely fit, experienced in mountain environments, and you can ensure its safety on steep, rocky terrain and in unpredictable weather.

Where is the best place to park for hiking Ben Nevis?

The main starting point for the Mountain Track is the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre in Glen Nevis. There is a large pay-and-display car park here. It can fill up very quickly, especially on weekends and during peak season, so arriving early is essential to secure a space.

What do other hikers enjoy most about this region?

The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Reviewers consistently praise the dramatic, world-class scenery of the high peaks and deep glens. The sheer variety of trails is also a major highlight, offering everything from accessible valley walks like the one to the Lost Valley to some of the UK's most challenging mountain scrambles.

How many hiking trails are available in Ben Nevis and Glen Coe?

There are over 300 hiking routes to explore in the region. This extensive network covers a wide range of difficulties, from over 100 easy walks in the valleys and lochsides to more than 100 difficult mountain ascents, ensuring there's a trail for every ability level.

What should I know about safety when hiking here?

Weather in the Scottish Highlands can change extremely rapidly. Even on a clear day, you should be prepared for wind, rain, and poor visibility, especially at higher elevations. Always carry a map, a compass, and know how to use them. For Ben Nevis, be particularly aware of the steep cliffs surrounding the summit plateau.

For detailed safety advice and mountain conditions, it's wise to check resources like the official VisitScotland Ben Nevis guide before you go.
