Thaya River Border Crossing Bridge (Thayatal National Park)

Highlight • Bridge

Don't forget your passport when hiking to the Czech Republic! A place steeped in history that brings back memories of terrible personal fates! We met a man whose family was separated by the border for many years; they only saw each other on occasional visits. Bunkers, customs houses and the remains of the Iron Curtain in Čížov are reminders of a bad past. How nice it is that people from both countries can meet again while hiking in the large shared national park.

Šobes Vineyard

Highlight • Structure

Šobes is one of the oldest and most famous vineyards in the Czech Republic. It is located in the area of Nine Mills in the middle of the Podyjí National Park, in the cadastral area of the Podmolí wine-growing village in the Znojmo wine-growing subregion. Accessible is either the old Roman road from Podmoli or, more easily, from Hnanice.

Thanks to its position on the southern slope of the rock promontory in the meandering of the Dyje River, the specific microclimate and the wines from this vineyard are among the highly prized ones. Vinice currently owns Znovín Znojmo, which purchased it from Podmolí in 1995.

The settlement was inhabited already in the early Stone Age. The prehistoric fortress was here during the Bronze Age, settled in the time of the Celts and Roman times. Already in the Middle Ages, the site was used to grow grapevine. The wine was famous for its quality and especially in the 19th century it was delivered to the imperial court and to the distinguished Viennese restaurants. The area of the entire vineyard is about 16 ha, the vine is cultivated on an area of about 11 hectares. The rest of the area occupies the apricot kits. The location is among the ten best wine-making locations in Europe.

In the narrowest place of the Český meander there is a view of both sides of the ridge. The surrounding area is a thermophilous oak forest with a rich presence of European parasitic oak. On the ridge leads the so-called Roman Way - an old trade route connecting the early middle ages of the Czech lands and Austria.
