August 9, 2025, Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Consolation of Montovolo

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Cosolazione, in Montovolo, dates back to the 12th century. It stands 912 meters above sea level, over a church dating back to before the year 1000, itself built on a pagan temple. Above the altar is a wooden sculpture of the Blessed Virgin and Child, dating back to the 15th century. Getting there is a very challenging climb.

It consists of three buildings. The one further down the valley dates back to 1475, belonging to the Vanini family. In 1661 it passed to the nuns of S. Giovanni Battista of Bologna, as an inheritance from Giovanni Mei, whose daughter was a nun in that convent. Remodeled in the 16th century, it has a portal and a 14th-century window of beautiful workmanship, perhaps unique in the entire mountain. The building upstream, in ruins, has aspects of the 16th century. Of notable impact and beauty are the statues in Montovolo stone and Carrara marble by the sculptor Luigi Faggioli, exhibited in the green area facing the ancient buildings. The church of Santa Maria Assunta is a Catholic religious building located in Ponte di Grizzana Morandi, near the Riola hamlet of the municipality of Vergato, built between 1975 and 1980 based on a design by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The system created by Aalto to give light to the church is of great architectural value. The Finnish architect, in fact, placed on the upper roof, between the various load-bearing arches, large and jagged windows that capture and diffuse solar radiation inside the building envelope: the light, reverberating on the white plaster of the perimeter walls, it therefore spreads throughout all the liturgical spaces, then converging towards the altar, the true formal and luminous node of the entire church.
