The Leopold Canal relieves the Elz during floods, which bring a lot of water from the Black Forest to the Rhei plain from the 3 rivers Elz, Glottertal and Dreisam during heavy rain or "melting snow". At Riegel there is a large weir system, with the help of which the water masses can be fed to the Rhine in a targeted manner via the Leopold Canal. The Elz is thus supplied with water in a controlled manner, from Riegel mills and the Europa Park are also served with it, and finally it also flows into the Rhine at Kappel.

The Leopold Canal is a canal for flood relief in the Elz. It is 12.5 km long, begins at Riegel am Kaiserstuhl and flows into the Rhine from the right at Niederhausen. In 1846 the canal was named after the then Grand Duke Leopold of Baden. (Wikipedia) It's amazing what humans can build.
