Welsperg Pond

Highlight • Historical Site

It is not just a “postcard lake”, but a living lake, where humans, plants and animals coexist. In fact, in this area the decrease in slopes favors water stagnation that forms a network of wetlands. Near the lake is the “Palù Grant”, the large marsh, an area of botanical and faunal interest that hosts rushes and marsh thistles as well as the typical Water reed (Phragmites australis) and some interesting species of orchid: Orchis tridentata, Epipactis palustris and Dactyloriza traunstaineri. This habitat is much appreciated by amphibians, trout and the crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes), a species now rare in Trentino due to pollution and artificialization of the waters.
In addition to the ecosystem recreated by the local park authority, bathing, fishing and exploration are possible in this place. The path around the lake can be traveled comfortably and safely by families, grandparents, children, couples, photographers,... You can then continue your walk for 3.5 km on the Sentiero delle Muse Fedaie (signposted "MF"), named in honor of the Greek Muses (divine entities connected with nature) and the feda, that is, the sheep of Val Canali. It is an educational itinerary, designed for adults and children, which clarifies how important the maintenance of biodiversity is.

First of all, hats off to those who do it with muscle .... starting from Croce d'Aune it is a relentless climb for about 11km with gradients ranging from 8 to 12%. With le-bikes you can alternate the first and second level of assistance (eco and tour for those with a Bosch engine) I never needed to go further. What can I say .... compared to what I had read of clean "earth" there is little. Most of the route is on a very stony and narrow old military road, almost a mule track. The stones are more annoying uphill than downhill, where if you give up a little, you can ride the bike better. The first section is in the middle of the woods, cool. It increases the emotion Waiting for the passages exposed. The second stretch is uncovered and very often exposed. The passages on the ridge are however "safe" because the mule track is wide, but beware of the numerous stones that can make you change direction when you are uphill if you do not manage the weight well. I had read the last section that it left more breathing room because it is less pending but perhaps it is the one that pulls the most .... at least along the path I have made.
The descent is beautiful. Obviously, to gain safety and perception of the same, it is better to go down the side opposite the precipices, but although I was very scared because for fear of dizziness, it is enough to give up a little to gain in trajectory stability as long as you manage the weights well by unloading on the pedals and standing back on the saddle in a dynamic and never rigid position. In short, the ebike helps us a lot to go up, but to go down it takes a minimum of technique in this case, so keep that in mind.
Attention also to the various uphill cyclists and hikers .... many stop and indulge you to let you pass perhaps on the "protected" side, others like pedestrians stay where they are. Have fun

Welsperg Lake is one of the symbols of the Canali Valley, its waters reflecting the peaks of the southern slope of Cimerlo. Near the lake is the "Palù Grant," a large marsh, an area of botanical and wildlife interest, home to rushes and thistles, as well as the typical common reed, and several interesting orchid species. In recent years, the lake has undergone significant environmental redevelopment and renaturalization, recreating a suitable habitat for amphibians and trout. This project has led to the naturalistic landscaping of the banks, the creation of floating and semi-submerged vegetated areas, and the establishment of refuge zones. The lake is also home to a significant number of crayfish, an aquatic invertebrate of considerable scientific value.
