Weiden owes its connection to the railway network in 1863 to Gustav Ritter von Schlör (1820 to 1883), the last Royal Bavarian Minister of Trade. Schlör was a staunch advocate of a comprehensive railway network. As director of the private Eastern Railway Company, he pushed through the state parliament for the construction of the railway line from Schwandorf via Weiden to Bayreuth, thus laying the foundation for the economic development of this structurally weak region. In recognition of his services, the city of Weiden made von Schlör an honorary citizen in 1878. Today, the square named after him and the monument erected in 1885 commemorate him. The monument was designed by architect Carl Hocheder, and the marble bust was by sculptor Theodor Haf. Weiden's technical college/vocational college and a hall in the Max Reger Hall are also named after him.

Schlörplatz Schlörplatz is located at the Lower Gate at the end of the old town. Gustav-von-Schlör-Platz is located on historical grounds. This was once the Lower Suburb, also known as the Leather Suburb, where tanners practiced their craft. A trapezoidal plot of land where the tax office now stands was built on in the Middle Ages with a hospital, church and cemetery. The Gustav-von-Schlör monument stands between the Jubilee Oak from 1824, which was planted to mark the 25th anniversary of King Max I's reign, and the Peace Oak from 1871. It commemorates the last Bavarian Minister of Trade, Gustav von Schlör (1820 - 1883), who achieved Weiden's railway connection in 1863 and thus initiated the town's economic boom. The monument was designed by architect Carl Hocheder, Munich, and the marble bust was created by sculptor Theodor Haf. Source: www.weiden-tourismus.info

The Lady Chapel near Alletshof has been renovated and is located east of the small town. A bench invites you to linger. Nice all-round view.
