The gate tower, along with the city wall, was part of the medieval city fortifications. Its passageway, the so-called Schwaikheim Gate, was the main entrance to the old town. The masonry, together with remnants of the city wall, represents the oldest surviving structure. The timber-framed upper floors were rebuilt 15 years after the devastating city fire of 1693.
