St. John’s Castle

Highlight • Castle

St. John’s Castle was built by the Spaniards between 1640 and 1644 to enhance the fortification system of Finale Ligure. The castle overlooked and protected Finalborgo, the capital of the Marquisate of Finale. St. John’s Castle was abandoned in 1707 and in 1713 it was ceded to the Genoese, who partially demolished it. In 1882 it was transformed into a women's prison and since 1960 it is owned by the Italian State, which completely restored it.

The castle rises majestically above Finalborgo. It's a somewhat arduous hike up, but the view(s) are worth it. The castle appears to be undergoing renovations, so you can't walk directly over it—but it will be interesting to see what the ruins will become in the future.
