Goldbergsee, a 145-hectare reservoir located between the districts of Neuses and Beiersdorf, is one of Coburg's most popular recreational areas. Originally conceived as a flood control basin, the lake has long since become a favorite destination for walks, hikes, bike rides, and relaxing breaks in nature. In the idyllic surroundings of Coburg, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the majestic Callenberg Castle, perched high on a hill overlooking the lake, and the Glender Wiesen bird sanctuary. Also worth a visit is the Rückerthaus, where the famous poet Friedrich Rückert once spent many happy hours. A highlight for hiking enthusiasts is the 14-kilometer "Coburg Sea" circular trail, which runs along Goldbergsee and offers breathtaking natural scenery. Schenkenau was first mentioned in 1286 as the ancestral seat of the von Rotenhan family. The medieval fortress on the Erfurt-Nuremberg trade route was destroyed except for the ground floor during the Peasants' War of 1525, but was subsequently rebuilt as a Ganerbenburg (Ganerbenburg). After 1437, the castle changed hands several times. Since 1960, Schenkenau has been owned by the Treiber family, who began generating electricity in 1961 and offered farm holidays since 1973. https://die-schenkenau.de/

The road toward Baunach is currently closed. The detour is to the left after the gate and then to the right in front of the sports field.

So yesterday, August 10th, it was the end of the season again... what a pity. It was packed, late afternoon, and there was a live band in the evening.

A very nice place to rest. A little further up, a little off the path, there's a small chapel.
