Probably built on top of an existing Roman temple. The oldest document attesting to its presence dates back to 1553. The work was completed in 1775. The facade was remodeled in neoclassical style (in red trachyte) between 1881 and 1895. The patron saint of Ittiri, celebrated on June 29th, resides in this church.

The church was built in 1610, the monastery a little later. In 1699 they undertook to build the bell tower while the monastery dedicated to San Francesco was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. However, in 1707 it was rededicated to the saint. In 1855 it was dissolved and remodeled by the municipality: one part became a barracks for the carabinieri, another became a district court; only the church remained for the brothers. In 1901 work began on a new monastery, the inauguration of which took place on June 4, 1908. On October 4th, 1957 the parish of San Francesco di Ittiri was founded. In 1978 the church was renovated.
