Numerous artists have contributed works of various kinds, telling an untold history of the region. More information at https://chemnitz2025.de/purple-path/ Jeppe Hein "Modified Social Bench for Jahnsdorf #01" in Jahnsdorf, playground at the train station Material: powder-coated aluminum Size: 1.45 x 6.61 x 5.32 m "Inspired by the benches in New York's Central Park and his exploration of themes such as "proximity and distance," the Berlin-based artist Jeppe Hein, born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1974, developed a series of sculptures entitled "Modified Social Bench." The artist alters the typical, globally encountered arrangement of seats, backrests, and corners, as well as the height of benches as part of urban furniture, so that sitting becomes a communicative act both physically and non-verbally. Hein's bench, designed specifically for the Jahnsdorf site, creates a course through curves and height differences that invites dynamic sitting, lying, or even sliding. In a playful way, he also dissolves the common principle of prohibiting the direct touching or use of art and raises questions about the conventions in dealing with works of art. Hein also extends his questioning to today's common functional objects in public space itself, which are usually erected and initiated by municipalities and local governments: sealed surfaces, city benches, playground furniture, or even designer sculptures. As a result, egalitarian and open spaces are increasingly disappearing, being rendered unusable, or closed off with the aim of protecting them from vandalism, misuse, or sabotage. The artist, together with Jahnsdorf residents, is addressing this controlling and exclusionary design of urban space with a work of art in an undesigned space beneath the train station. Here, with his 2024 sculpture "Modified Social Bench for Jahnsdorf #01," Hein playfully opens up a field of interpersonal communication that focuses on the encounter between people.
