It is said that when the heads of the families of the towns of Campel and Cergnai began to build the church in a less inaccessible location, the birds, by will of the Saint, carried the materials higher up during the night. It is also believed that the small shelter next to the church, during the World Wars, was used as a hideout by fugitives. San Mauro, invoked to cure toothache, is still celebrated with a procession that goes up from Cergnai.
