Lake del Mis

Highlight • Lake

Lake Mis (Lach del Mìs) is a suggestive body of water located between the municipalities of Gosaldo and Sospirolo, in the Belluno Dolomites National Park, between the Monte del Sole and the Feltrine peaks. It was the second most beautiful lake in Italy according to the 2019 ranking drawn up by the Touring Club.

Its nature is of artificial genesis. The dam that holds back the water, 91 meters high and 220 meters long, was built in 1962 near the town of Pascoli and is still used today for the production of hydroelectric energy. The wild appearance of the Mis valley, capable of hiding true environmental and historical treasures with the harshness of its appearance, undoubtedly contributes to the fame that the lake has been able to gain in recent times.

Historic centre of Mel

Highlight • Historical Site

Mel has a very ancient history: its origins are paleo-Venetian. Subsequently between the V and III century BC. the Gauls settled there and left traces in the toponymy of the area.
As with the rest of the valley, the Zumellese area also became part of Roman history. Furthermore, the territory was crossed by the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, a remarkably important road that connected the Po Valley with the Alps.
With the end of the Roman Empire the barbarians took over. The presence of the Lombards is significant, leaving traces in places of worship such as the church of San Donato.
With the Middle Ages numerous manors arose to defend the valley and the communication routes. The most important was certainly the Castle of Zumelle, the main pivot of the defensive system of the entire Valbelluna. Mel remained Venetian until the arrival of Napoleon who upset the whole administrative system. In the nineteenth century the territory suffered the same fate as the entire valley: the two world wars brought a heavy toll of Zumellese human lives.
In the 1950s it depopulated due to emigration. With the economic boom the country changed from being totally agricultural and peasant to its current form, with important industrial and artisan companies.

Piazza dei Martiri, Belluno

Highlight • Settlement

Belluno manages to combine the dynamics of a city with the charm of a mountain town. The city is framed by the Dolomites to the north and the Venetian pre-Alps to the south and its center extends into a bend in the Piave river. The name, derived from the Celtic, means "bright city" and is an excellent description for Belluno, splendid in the light of every season. There are numerous places of interest to visit especially in the pedestrian center such as the Belluno Cathedral with its baroque bell tower or the more recent Ponte della Vittoria. To immerse yourself in city life, nothing better than a walk in Piazza dei Martiri, the true social hub of Belluno.

Bus del Buson Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Narrow and deep gorge carved in remote times by the waters of the Ardo stream, which subsequently abandoned its course, lowering itself by about 150 meters. Recent theories attribute the origin of this fossil gorge to a subglacial torrent. Today this jewel of nature is walkable and is used as an extraordinary auditorium to host events.

The canyon extends for about 250 meters with a sinuous course; its smooth walls, deeply carved in the flint limestone of the Biancone, testify to the ancient working of the waters. In some places the width is just a few meters, while in the central part the rocky walls move away leaving large spaces.

It is also called Bus de la S'cesòra (notch): it is a cut in the rock, which proceeds between rocky walls that almost touch each other. This gorge was carved by a subglacial torrent, about 15 thousand years ago. A landslide diverted the torrent that left the gorge, carving out a new path parallel to the original one: in fact the Ardo flows 150 meters lower
