The little church of Sant'Antonio, located approximately halfway up the Serrai di Sottoguda gorge, was built in ancient times with the specific purpose of protecting travelers who ventured into the gorge, which until a few decades ago was the only route to Malga Ciapela and the Fassa Valley. Originally dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot, protector of animals, following a mass slaughter, it was later dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is June 13th. This was to allow the population to more easily reach the church for Holy Mass during a more favorable time of year, such as spring. It was renovated in 1880. In 1934, a plaque was placed there in memory of those who fell in the First World War on the Marmolada front. The two frescoes on the side transepts of the entrance door depict Saint Sebastian and Saint Rocco, patron saints of the church of Sottoguda.

Stunning trail in the middle of the woods with arrival at Malga Federa. In winter and with a lot of snow crampons are absolutely necessary, many sections can be icy; if there is deep snow the trail could be hidden but there are several signs on the trees. In these conditions a bit of experience and a lot of caution are necessary, some short passages a bit exposed and an easy section equipped.

I think the magic of the five towers is that they can be reached by all fitness levels: Level Easy: Take the lift. From the lift station it is a few hundred meters walk until you can touch the five towers. Level Medium: It is possible to walk along tarred and gravel paths with relatively little incline to the mountain station and from there to reach the towers as described above. Level Advanced: From the valley station it is about 400 meters in altitude that lead through the forest and directly through the five towers. We did the approx. 8 km tour in about 3 hours because we stopped a lot for pictures. The tour is public and you are welcome to follow along. https://www.komoot.com/de-DE/tour/1810377005?ref=itd

It's really impressive when you stand in front of the towers for the first time. Unfortunately, everything is too touristy and so hikers in Jesus slippers also come up here.

The region around Selva di Cadore, nestled in the Val Fiorentina, features several impressive natural formations. Among the most popular are Cinque Torri, known for its dramatic rock formations and panoramic views, and Serrai di Sottoguda, a 2 km long canyon with towering rock walls and waterfalls. You can also explore Gores de Federa, a stunning trail through the woods, and various rocky sections throughout the Dolomites.
Yes, within the Serrai di Sottoguda gorge, you can find the Chapel of Sant'Antonio of the Serrai di Sottoguda. This religious building was historically built to protect travelers passing through the gorge and has been renovated, offering a glimpse into the region's past.
The Val Fiorentina, where Selva di Cadore is located, boasts a rich Triassic geological history. You'll encounter formations from the Werfen Formation, characterized by fine sandstone, siltites, and micaceous limestone, often displaying strong green and red colors. The landscape is a result of millions of years of degradation from gravity, surface water, subterranean water, and ice, creating deep gorges, dramatic rock walls, and water-eroded formations.
While the Val Fiorentina's geology suggests the presence of many smaller gorges and water-eroded formations, specific named canyons for recreational canyoning directly within Selva di Cadore are not prominently highlighted. The broader Dolomites and Veneto region, however, do offer various canyoning experiences. If you're interested in canyoning, it's advisable to look for guided tours that operate in the wider Dolomite area, as specialized centers exist for this purpose.
Some areas are family-friendly. For instance, Cinque Torri and Serrai di Sottoguda are noted as family-friendly. However, trails like Gores de Federa and the Rocky Section in the Dolomites are considered challenging and require sure-footedness and appropriate footwear, especially in winter or wet conditions.
The region offers a wide array of outdoor activities. You can enjoy extensive hiking trails, including routes like the Mondeval Loop or Cima Fertazza Summit. There are also numerous mountain biking trails, such as the Monte Pelmo loop, and running routes like the Nuvolau and Cinque Torri Loop. Beyond these, the area is popular for mountaineering, via ferratas, and sport fishing.
The Serrai di Sottoguda is a spectacular 2 km long canyon with impressive rock walls and waterfalls. However, it's important to note that due to damage from Storm Vaia in autumn 2019, the road within the gorge was washed away. It may take some time before it is fully repaired and safely passable again. Always check local conditions before planning your visit.
Cinque Torri is a highly popular natural monument known for its dramatic rock formations, which are a magnet for sport climbers. Visitors enjoy the stunning panoramic views and the opportunity to observe climbers in action. It's also recognized for its beautiful natural scenery and historical significance.
The best time to visit generally depends on the activity. For hiking and exploring the gorges, late spring to early autumn (May to October) offers pleasant weather. During winter, the landscape transforms, and some areas, like Gores de Federa, may require crampons due to ice and deep snow. The region is also part of the Ski Civetta circuit, making winter popular for skiing and ice climbing in certain areas like Serrai di Sottoguda when conditions allow.
The Val Fiorentina holds significant archaeological importance. The 'V. Cazzetta' Civic Museum in Selva di Cadore houses remarkable finds, including the 'Skeleton of the Mondeval Man,' dating back 7,500 years, and dinosaur footprints discovered on Mount Pelmetto. These discoveries offer fascinating insights into the ancient history of the region.
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking natural beauty and the dramatic geological formations. The opportunity to witness sport climbers at Cinque Torri, the awe-inspiring rock walls and waterfalls of Serrai di Sottoguda, and the stunning trails through areas like Gores de Federa are frequently highlighted. The region's unique blend of natural grandeur and opportunities for outdoor adventure is highly valued by the community.
