Popular around Doberdò Del Lago / Doberdob
Located just a few kilometers from Duino Castle, in the western sector of the Gorizia Karst, Lake Pietrarossa is one of the pearls of the Regional Natural Reserve shared with the nearby Lake Doberdò. Together with the latter, it represents one of the very rare examples in Europe of a karst lake: a temporary basin that occupies a natural depression called a polje. The charm of this place lies in its changing nature; it is not fed by surface rivers, but by the oscillations of the underground water table. During rainy periods, water emerges from the depths, flooding the plain, while in dry seasons the lake can almost disappear, leaving space for a verdant carpet of reeds and wet meadows. This alternation creates a unique ecosystem where the arid and rocky karst landscape meets a humid area rich in biodiversity, making it a paradise for birdwatching and silent excursions.

In the Monfalcone Great War Theme Park, the trenches are still in an extraordinary state of preservation and allow for an understanding of the hard and tragic life of soldiers in the trenches during World War I.

A small lake with a water level that varies widely seasonally, it's surrounded by a route that's partly on dirt roads with no technical difficulties, and partly on a single-track trail with a karst surface. This is technically challenging, but it also provides access to various observation platforms suspended over the lake. To avoid the section with crashes, ups and downs, tight curves, and rocks jutting out of the ground, you can complete the tour along a small road (always rarely used) slightly further from the lake, which therefore takes away some of the magic... I recommend visiting the springs section; it's truly fascinating.

An unmarked chasm; you have to know it to know its existence. It is said that in ancient times it was the course of a river, perhaps the Vipava.

If you're nearby, it's worth a look. ☺️ It's difficult to linger too long since there are about a billion mosquitoes, all of whom are obviously starving. 🙈🙈

Very interesting biotype, one of the few examples in Europe of a karst lake-pond, whose level changes continuously depending on the Vipacco and Isonzo rivers.

Altitude 121 is the highest of the Monfalcone hills and dominates the city with an excellent view towards the Slovenian Karst and the Adriatic Sea. In this position, in 1915, one of the defensive strongholds of the Austro-Hungarian army was established during the Great War which repelled attacks from the Third Army until August 1916. Subsequently the position came under Italian control and the trenches were transformed into the front line, interspersing machine gun positions and caves adapting the pre-existing Austro-Hungarian lines.
