Luca N.
May 10, 2026, Sacrario Militare di Asiago

The Military Shrine of Asiago, also known as the Sacrario del Leiten, stands majestically on the homonymous hill to honor the memory of the fallen of the Great War. Inaugurated in 1936, the imposing white marble structure is distinguished by its iconic four-fronted triumphal arch, twenty meters high, which dominates the entire Altopiano dei Sette Comuni. Inside the square base, a dense network of galleries houses the remains of over 54,000 soldiers, many of them unknown, belonging to both the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies. In addition to its commemorative function, the site houses a war museum rich in memorabilia and documents from the era. Traversing its spaces of silence offers a profound reflection on human sacrifice and the history of the alpine front, making the monument not only a symbol of patriotic devotion but also a solemn warning for peace addressed to future generations.

This spot – which can be reached, among other places, along the "Path of Silence" (Sentiero del Silenzio) – was dedicated to "Papa Giovanni Paolo II" (Pope John Paul II), whose real name was Karol Wojtyla. He was born in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920 and, after the death of Pope John Paul I in 1978, was elected – to almost everyone's surprise – as his successor at the head of the Catholic Church. As a young man, he had experienced dictatorships under the Nazi regime in German-occupied Poland and later under communist rule. During the so-called "Cold War," his support for freedom movements, especially in Eastern Europe, and his contribution to the fall of the so-called "Iron Curtain" were correspondingly strong and passionate. Karol Wojtyla (Giovanni Paolo II) died in the Vatican in 2005 after a long illness.

CIPPO DI NICCOLAI: monument erected in memory of Eugenio Niccolai, Captain of the Sassari Brigade who fell on 31 January 1918 in the First Battle of the "Three Mountains" (Valbella, Col del Rosso and Col d'Echele), which was decisive in halting the advance of the Austro-Hungarian army towards the Vicenza plain below.

Simple and educational trail. The solar system is shown along the path at a scale of 1/1 billion. It was carried out by the staff of the Asiago astrophysical observatory. Each planet is in scale of size and distance as in the solar system. For each planet there are explanatory panels. Don't miss it!

This stretch of cycle path runs along the former Rocchette-Asiago railway, which crosses the Asiago plateau, and allows you to cycle through these areas in complete tranquility, pedalling on a smooth, mostly asphalted and flat route.

On the Asiago plateau, not far from Col de Rosso, there is this pyramid-shaped monument. It is dedicated to the memory of Captain Eugenio Nicolai, hero of the Sassari Brigade and Gold Medal for Military Valor, who died in these very areas in 1918, during the First World War.

The Asiago train station was the terminus of the 22km railway line which, from 1910 to 1958, connected the Vicenza plain (Piovene Rocchette) to the Sette Comuni plateau, stopping at several small intermediate stations. It was opened in 1910; it was destroyed, together with the whole country, by the bombings of the First World War, during the Strafexpedition of 1916; after the war it was rebuilt following the original project; in the 1980s it was renovated, with some modifications, to become the headquarters of the Unione Montana Spettabile Reggenza dei Sette Comuni. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stazione_di_Asiago
