Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Sassari

Highlight ‱ Religious Site

The most impressive part of Sassari's Cathedral of St. Nicholas is its imaginative Baroque facade with playful pedestals, balconies, coats of arms, pilasters and floral capital decorations. Watching over this limestone work of art is an imposing statue of the city's patron saint: San Nicola da Bari, Saint Nicholas of Myra. He is only crowned at the top of the facade by the Lord God with a globe; and on the lower floor of the tripartite gabled facade there are three niches with the three martyrs of Sassari: Gavino, Proto and Gianuario.
The facade, which is strongly reminiscent of the Spanish colonial baroque in South America, stands out strongly from the rest of the outer walls: the Gothic nave is far less picturesque than the imposing entrance area. The interior of the church, on the other hand, is dominated by medieval Gothic with partially exposed, high ribbed vaults. The sacristy of Sassari Cathedral also houses the Duomo Museum, where, with a bit of luck, you can admire paintings, silverwork, statues, religious cult objects and liturgical vestments.

Very impressive from the outside. I didn't go inside because they charged a €3 entrance fee (September 2025).

The described starting point or access to the national park is not possible as shown (the gates are locked). Entrance is available for a fee (€9 per person) only at the "main entrance" near Villa Romana (as of June 9, 2025).

Internal view It is a classic "senzillas tower" located on the road between the other gates of Porto Ferro[1]. Erected in the 16th century, it is made of a compost heap of calcareous rock and calcareous malt; it is about 6 meters tall, has a diameter at the base of about 12 meters and remains intact on the inside of the interior[2]; the only entrance door is a 1.5-3 meter high post entrance from where you can access the interior, delimited by a volta on the dome with a central view and surrounded by various niches and holidays.

The Torre di Airadu (or Torre Radu, Torre Bianca or Torre di Mezzo) is a tower in the bay of Porto Ferro (Sassari); when they joined the Torre Negra and the Torre di Bantine Sale, it was one of the three towers that dominated this coast and protected the island from Saracen incursions during the reign of Filippo II.
