The bridgehead of the Ronde van Vlaanderenbrug on the Trakelweg side is popular as a sports location. Almost daily, people exercising - with or without a personal coach - can be found here. Edward Houpline, sports coach and owner of EDE Sport and Movement, a frequent user of the location himself, submitted a proposal to give the bridgehead some color, using the urban project subsidy 'Paint your city'. For this, he collaborated with street artists LA.KUS (Koksijde) and KIEWIE.9000 (Gent). The artworks - realized in the spring of 2023 - are a nod to the Leie river and sporting activities. A bathhouse (bathing and swimming facility) from 1936-1937 in the style of a packet boat, designed by Gaston Boghemans (Menen), officially opened on June 18, 1938. The shipyard was visited by King Leopold III in 1936. The building was thoroughly restored in 2002 and reopened as an indoor swimming pool in 2003. Typical (for this packet boat style) are the porthole windows, the rounded corners, and the horizontality. Originally, there was an outdoor swimming pool with an Olympic-sized pool and a small children's pool in the shape of a semicircle with an adjacent sandpit and terrace. The large pool had two diving boards, one three meters high and one one meter. The complex was surrounded by stands and a solarium. Source: Inventory of Immovable Heritage

In 1920, a new branch of the Leie was excavated in Menen and fitted with locks. In 1990, engineers diverted the course of the Leie again, creating a small island between the old and new riverbeds. It lies on French territory and is now a pleasant park. You can reach it via the bridge over the locks. (See the highlight "Old Leie Branch") The locks' age is evident in their construction materials: not concrete, but individual stones. The 1920 work was intended to make the Leie navigable for boats up to 300 tons – by comparison, the river is now suitable for vessels up to 1,350 tons. The complex has been a protected monument since 2005. Source: toerisme-leiestreek.be
