The first church in Lichtervelde was probably founded by the Lords of Lichtervelde. In 1197 the church (altar) was mentioned for the first time and in 1204 the church was dedicated to Saint James the Greater. In 1583 the first Romanesque church was destroyed and burned down, probably by the Geuzen, only the tower remained standing. The church was rebuilt and is described by Sanderus in 1640. The small church was demolished in 1877 to make way for the current neo-Gothic church. Unfortunately it did not remain standing for long, in 1918 the tower was blown up by the Germans, a large part of the church was destroyed. The church was rebuilt as before. For the past two centuries, the Torhout/Lichtervelde region was known for the cultivation and processing of chicory. When adding chicory to coffee (yes, that's how it was done in my childhood at home) fell into disuse at the end of the 20th century, demand for chicory gradually declined. Chicory was dried by heating on asten (drying floors). Many asten have disappeared, others remain. Some are dilapidated, but a few have been renovated in recent years with respect for their history. This one here has been converted into housing.
