A road worthy of its name. Oxen are not to be seen here. They are literally gone. "Ossenweg". A journey to relax.

To prevent the increase in escape attempts, a ring moat was dug from 1893 onwards, approximately 10 meters wide and almost 7 km long. The mapped out walk 'The Escape Path' follows this ring moat / ring wall.

De Blakheide is a beautiful nature reserve and hiking area in Beerse on the border with Rijkevorsel. It is a relatively narrow strip of planted coniferous forest next to a very large clay pit. In this area there are also some fens, old peat pits and pieces of heathland that have defied the test of time.

The nature reserves are a remnant of the historic Ab(t)sheide, which stretched across the border area of the municipalities of Beerse, Rijkevorsel and Merksplas. The fens and pools attract many special plants and animals. A hotspot for salamanders and dragonflies. Proof that nature thrives there! You can also enjoy a nice walk between the Galloway cattle and sheep during the grazing period. Sturdy and waterproof shoes are strongly recommended, especially in wet periods.
