At the end of the 18th century, the area of the Merodese forests was mainly characterized by heathland and impassable wetlands. Around 1800, mainly coniferous forests were planted, the pine wood had to serve as support for mining. The de Merode family owned this area for more than 100 years. Since 1992, the Merodese forests have been owned by the Flemish Region, so that the forest was saved from the hands of construction promoters. It is now a beautiful walking area.
