De Cogels-Osylei is the central axis and status symbol of the Berchem part of the Zurenborg district, bordered by Uitbreidingstraat and Tramplaats, and widened in the middle to a circular square. The impressive groups of houses and individual villas, all built between 1894 and 1908 and preserved almost intact, are described in 43 inventory sheets. 18 of these 43 sheets, accounting for 56 homes out of a total of 88 houses in the Cogels-Osylei, were realized by the Naamlooze Maatschappij voor het bouwen van Burgershuizen in het Oostkwartier (Public Limited Company for the construction of Townhouses in the East Quarter). In this way, they succeeded in developing the Cogels-Osylei into the prestigious crown of their large project that encompasses the entire Zurenborg district. Characteristic of the streetscape are the monumental, highly decorated, eclectic groups of houses, mainly concentrated in the northern half of the street. These are all realizations of the Company, which engaged the most popular architects of that time for them. Further south, towards Berchem Station, there are also individual townhouses, built by private individuals. It is striking that they too often called upon the architects promoted by the Company. It is remarkable how perfectly the streetscape of the Cogels-Osylei has been preserved. Only three homes were replaced by new construction.
