The footbridge over the Ter Erpenbeek (Arpia), which forms the border between the villages of Ressegem and Woubrechtegem here, has been known for centuries under the name Schapenbrugje (Sheep Bridge). Originally, it was a simple plank bridge, known as a 'vondeltje', used to lead the sheep from the Hof te Raeckhout (Ressegem) to pastures on the Aaigemsveld (Woubrechtegem). The large farm on the left bank of the stream disappeared from the landscape at the end of the 18th century, and with it the original function of the bridge. Afterwards, the footbridge continued to function as an important part of the field path between the two villages. From the bridge, children would throw homemade fishing lines or search for sticklebacks in the babbling water. Today, the Schapenbrugje is a well-known spot for hikers and mountain bikers. This dirt road connects Vianebaan and Werfstraat. After heavy or prolonged rainfall, it becomes very muddy, and some sections can be flooded. The proximity of the Mark River contributes to this.

The official climb begins on a concrete and rather flat surface. Suddenly, the forest appears, interspersed with cobblestones; that's where the real climb begins.

I was lucky enough to drive through it after a few days of rain. In autumn, the clay soil is very slippery. But once you've made it through, it's all the more exhilarating 😅. This was definitely the toughest part of the whole route. The wall through Geeraardsbergen was easy by comparison. 🫣😂

St. Martin's Church in Burst – Neo-Gothic beauty with ancient roots. Built in 1852 on the foundations of a centuries-old parish, this church is a Neo-Gothic gem in the heart of Burst. Inside, you can admire murals, marble altars, and a historic organ. A place where silence, art, and history converge – the perfect resting place during a walk or bike ride through Erpe-Mere. On Sundays, there's a large chicken stall where you'll work up an appetite and a craving for something to eat. I didn't expect it myself, but next time I know where to picnic 😉
