Hopperstad Stave Church

Highlight • Religious Site

This stave church is one of the oldest in Norway, probably built in 1130.
In 1880 a monument preservation association bought the church from the municipality of Vik to preserve it.
Admission is charged and an information leaflet worth reading is distributed in various languages.
Incidentally, you can be unlucky if several buses with crusaders "flood" the little church.

Borgund Stave Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Built around 1070, it is one of the oldest stave churches in Norway and so it was also on our list of sights. This church is also very impressive from the outside, which is followed by disappointment when entering. For 90 kroner/adult, 70 kronor/children or 220 kronor for a family, it is actually a valid consideration whether to go to church or “just” look at it from the outside. Inside, a very dark room awaits you in which there isn't much else to be found, except for a tombstone, a speaker's post and a few old murals.
We were told beforehand that there isn't much to see, but we decided to visit the church anyway and it was okay. For us, the thought "if we're here, then we'll go in" counted more.
But everyone should decide for themselves whether pictures from the inside are enough for them or whether they want to see it live.

Likholefossen Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

The somewhat macabre origin of the name "Likholefossen", meaning "mortuary waterfall", comes from the fact that some of the upper farms in the valley could not transport their dead to the church in one day. The coffin was then temporarily stored under a stone slab by the waterfall. (Wikipedia)
