Gaustatoppen Summit Cabin

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Up above, almost at the summit, there's a hut. Those who want to spend the night and descend early the next morning must make a reservation. To enjoy one of the delicious waffles, simply stand in line and top it with strawberry or cherry. Those who don't feel like descending can take the cable car. The "Gaustahnen" cable car runs inside the mountain, below the antenna. The cable car was built between 1954 and 1959, during the Cold War. It runs between the listening station (antenna) and the village of Rjukan in the valley. After the end of the Cold War, the cable car was opened to the public. The cable car consists of two tracks: a flat track (850 m) and a steep cable car (1045 m incline).

The Gaustabanen is a unique funicular railway that takes visitors to the summit of Gaustatoppen. What makes it special is that most of the railway runs inside the mountain. Construction began in the 1950s as a top-secret NATO military project to reach a radio and radar installation on the summit. The railway's existence was only revealed in 1990, and it has been open to tourists since 2010. The journey consists of two sections: - A small, battery-powered train travels 850 meters horizontally into the mountain. - At the end, you transfer to a funicular railway that travels 1,040 meters diagonally upwards to the top station just below the summit. The Gaustabanen makes visiting Gaustatoppen, with its breathtaking views, much easier and is definitely a unique experience. 😉👍

Beware. This parking lot will cost you an arm and a leg! We were there at 8:30…. Parking until 12:00 was 300 kroner, and after 12:00 another 300. No middle ground, no way to pay for the actual time you are parked there. Paid 600, but I am absolutely furious. What a dirty rip-off!

A popular and straightforward route that features a hefty amount of elevation gain. However, two rewards await you at the summit. First, there are the magnificent views of the mountains of the mountains of Telemark, Buskerud, and the Oslomarka. Second, there's the thrilling run back down.

The waffles are delicious. In the summer you can walk up and down, of course, and in the winter a ride on the train is very exciting!
