Rondvassbu is the DNT cabin in the very heart of the Rondane National Park and is deservedly popular. Originally built in 1903, the facility has seen many renovations in its time and provides unrivalled access to Rondane’s major peaks and trails. If you plan to camp nearby, you can still pay for the use of the facilities and purchase food.

The largest DNT cabin in Rondane National Park. It's a good base for adventures in the region, including Rondslottet, the national park's highest summit. The Spranget car park to the southwest provides access.

The route starts at the car park and from there it goes towards the mountain. The first river crossing can be mastered easily with your shoes off. In mid-September there is nothing going on in the village itself and it is deserted. The second river crossing is no longer passable from mid-September (we were there on 20 September) as the boards for crossing are pulled out over the winter. The current is relatively strong! A bypass is possible by returning to the village and after one of the first crossings again. To do this, follow the river down the other side to the same road (no guarantee of solid ground!). The hike is easy until mid-September, after that it is not an easy task due to the large amount of water and lack of crossing options.

A good starting point for a tour in or through Rondane National Park. The bus from Otta runs several times a day in summer and is very inexpensive. The Rondvassbu Hut is about 6-7 kilometers away.

Dovre offers a wide variety of huts, catering to different preferences. You'll find fully-staffed lodges like DNT Rondvassbu and DNT Snøheim, which provide amenities such as catering, showers, and drying rooms. There are also self-service huts like Reinheim and Grøvudalshytta, offering a more rustic, self-sufficient wilderness experience. Some, like Åmotdalshytta, are open year-round without needing a DNT key.
For those aiming to conquer Dovre's high peaks, DNT Rondvassbu is an excellent base for numerous 2000-meter peaks in Rondane National Park, including Rondslottet. DNT Snøheim is unparalleled for summiting Snøhetta and exploring ten other peaks over 2,000 meters in Dovrefjell National Park. Reinheim also serves as a great starting point for Snøhetta.
Yes, several huts are suitable for families. DNT Rondvassbu is a popular choice, and the nearby Spranget Trailhead offers bike rentals for the 6 km route to Rondvassbu, making it an accessible start. Grøvudalshytta is also easily accessible via a seven-kilometer, flat walking path from Hallen in Sunndalen, ideal for a pleasant late summer trip.
Access varies by hut. For DNT Snøheim, a shuttle bus runs from Hjerkinn multiple times daily during peak season to minimize disturbance to wild reindeer. For DNT Rondvassbu, you can hike or rent a bike from the Spranget Trailhead. Some huts, like Reinheim, require a longer hike, such as the 16 km route from Kongsvold.
The Dovre region is renowned for its unique wildlife. Visitors often have the chance to spot musk oxen, especially during the shuttle bus journey to DNT Snøheim or on the hike to Reinheim from Kongsvold. The area is also a crucial migratory path for wild reindeer, which are protected, sometimes leading to seasonal trail closures.
No, not all huts require a DNT key. Åmotdalshytta, for example, is open year-round and operates without the need for a DNT key or advance booking. However, many self-service huts, such as Gammelsetra and some off-season DNT facilities, do require a DNT key for access. It's always best to check the specific hut's requirements before your trip.
The best time to visit depends on your preferred experience. Staffed huts like DNT Rondvassbu are typically open during Easter and the summer season. Self-service lodging is available in the off-season for some huts. Be aware that some areas and trails, like the route between Reinheim and Kongsvold, have seasonal closures (e.g., August 23 to February 28) to protect wild reindeer during sensitive periods.
Staffed DNT huts, such as DNT Rondvassbu and DNT Snøheim, offer a range of comforts. These can include hot and cold running water, showers, drying rooms, and catering services with meals. Some even have a serving license for beer and wine, providing a comfortable experience after a day of hiking.
Yes, Dovre is home to huts with rich history. Peer Gynt Hut offers a traditional, rustic experience. The first hut at Reinheim was built in 1888, and DNT Snøheim has a history dating back to 1952. Gammelsetra is described as an 'antique backpackers hut,' providing a glimpse into traditional hut life.
The huts serve as excellent bases for various outdoor activities. You can embark on challenging mountain hikes, including summiting peaks like Rondslottet or Snøhetta. There are also opportunities for road cycling and gravel biking on routes like the 'Wooden Footbridge Over River – Beautiful gravel road loop from Hjerkinn.' The DNT network provides extensive marked trails for both foot and ski.
Yes, for some DNT huts, camping is permitted nearby. For instance, near DNT Rondvassbu, there is a designated campsite 50 meters north of the hut. Campers are often allowed to use the hut's facilities, such as restrooms and drying rooms, and can purchase food or use catering services.
Reinheim is an excellent choice for those seeking an undisturbed wilderness experience. It offers no cell phone coverage, operates as a self-service hut with a wood stove, solar power for lighting, and gas for cooking. Guests manage their own cooking and water collection, appealing to those who desire solitude and a raw mountain adventure.
The DNT network in Dovre is ideal for multi-day treks. A classic route involves Rondvassbu, Dørålseter, and Bjørnhollia. Åmotdalshytta can be incorporated into scenic and challenging routes, such as a trek from Reinheim that passes over the summit of Snøhetta. The extensive DNT trail network connects many huts, allowing for various hut-to-hut itineraries.
