Glittertinden

Highlight • Summit

Once the highest mountain in Scandinavia, it now stands at 8,045 feet (2,452 m), which is the elevation without the remaining summit glacier.

In good weather, the ascent can be described as a physically demanding but technically easy hike. Further up, you'll have to walk on rocks and large stones, and then another snowfield awaits at the summit. This is no problem, as long as you don't get too close to the overhanging snow cornices at the summit or, in poor visibility, before reaching it. The descent to Glitterheim can then be completed largely on a toboggan, some of it up to 5,249 feet (1,600 m). Great fun :)

Besseggen Ridge

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Nice ridge and scramble tour. A lot of activity in almost any weather. But even if it is sometimes advertised as a family hike, the ridge passage should not be underestimated, especially when it is wet and with poor visibility or with heavy luggage! If in doubt, it is better to go uphill and have your heavy backpack transported on the ferry. Starting from Memurubu also has the advantage that you have no time pressure to catch a ferry back to Gjendesheim in time. Overall, a very nice end to a multi-day basic trekking tour through Jotunheimen.

Surefootedness and suitable footwear are mandatory. During our visit, in single-digit temperatures, fog and rain, everything down to sneakers and what felt like sweatpants was present. However, the porters clearly felt anything but comfortable on the tour.

Ridderspranget Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Ridderspranget - The knight's daring canyon jump

Ridderspranget, the knight's jump, is an impressive, 8 meter deep gorge not far from Reichsstraße 51 in the eastern Jotunheimen Mountains (signposted). The wild foaming water of the Sjoa makes its way through the middle of lichen and pine-clad slate rock and rushes through glacier mills. Here you can feel the power of nature and at the same time follow the traces of an old Norwegian legend.

It is said that it was in the 14th century when knight Sigvard Kvie from Vang in the Valdres in the village of Vågå went on bride robbery. With the beautiful maid Skårvangssola, who was actually promised to the Sandbu knight Ivar Gjesling, in his arms, he fled from his pursuers and headed his horse straight for the gorge. The steed skipped this. He pushed the first of his pursuers, a loyal Ivar, into the ravine as a warning sign of what would be threatened by those to come.

The gorge is about 30 kilometers north of the Besseggen ridge, south of Vågå.

Sognefjellshytta

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Sognefjellshytta is located right on the FV55 scenic route at the highest point of Sognefjell at 1,400 meters above sea level. It is a popular training location for ski associations and, since the new lounge between the two traditional buildings was completed in 2015, it is also a great place for a coffee break. The architecture of the connecting building is a beautiful combination of wood and glass, which spreads the light throughout the space.

Unfortunately, I have a fear of heights, and this section was quite challenging for me in places. But it was doable. You definitely need sure footing and must concentrate solely on the rock. Dogs sometimes have to be carried. We saw someone turn back on the hike with a large dog. Hopefully, you'll catch the last ferry or find a place to stay in Mermurubu. The views, even up to the ridge, are simply wonderful.

The Sognefjellshytta offers good accommodation. It has inexpensive rooms, offers good and inexpensive food and has a very pleasant personality. The modern construction between the earlier old buildings is wonderfully successful.
