The view of the lakes, from the ridge, is incredible so be sure to allow plenty of time for breaks. It's a demanding hike so you definitely need to be sure-footed. If you hike the entire ridge, hopefully you'll find a place to stay overnight in Mermurubu.

Unfortunately, I have a fear of heights, and this section was quite challenging for me in places. But it was doable. You definitely need sure footing and must concentrate solely on the rock. Dogs sometimes have to be carried. We saw someone turn back on the hike with a large dog. Hopefully, you'll catch the last ferry or find a place to stay in Mermurubu. The views, even up to the ridge, are simply wonderful.

The top spot in Norway. Even in summer, there's snow there, and the weather can be really bad. But when it's sunny, you can see the surroundings so well. There are also small binoculars, and the hut is right next to it. A place I highly recommend. It's not easy to get there, but it's worth it.

At 5,718 feet (1,743 m), Veslfjellet is the highest point on the famous Besseggen Ridge. In contrast to some of the narrower sections on the route, the summit is relatively broad but the views are still spectacular.

The summit itself is far less spectacular than the ridge.

Skautkampan is a small peak rising to 4,734 feet (1,443 m). Located at the western edge of the Skautflye plateau, it is the gateway to the vast Visdalen Valley. It also offers exceptional views of the glaciers of Galdhøpiggen, Norway's highest mountain at 8,100 feet (2,686 m).

Amazing hiking and view. However, if you are scared of heights, think twice before going there.

For breathtaking panoramic views, consider Galdhøpiggen, the highest peak in Northern Europe, which offers 360-degree views of Jotunheimen National Park. Besseggen Ridge is also renowned for its incredible views of the lakes from its ridge. Additionally, Veslfjellet, the highest point on the Besseggen crossing, provides a fantastic view of the deeper Gjende lake and surrounding mountains. The local mountain, Lomseggen, offers magnificent views of Jotunheimen, Reinheimen, and Rondane national parks.
Some of the most popular and challenging hiking trails include the ascent to Galdhøpiggen, which can be done from Juvasshytta (with a guided glacier crossing) or Spiterstulen (longer, no glacier). The Besseggen Ridge trail is another demanding hike offering spectacular views. For a more local experience, the well-marked trail to Lomseggen starts directly from Lom town center. You can find more detailed hiking routes in the Hiking around Lom guide.
The mountain peaks around Lom, particularly within Jotunheimen National Park, are characterized by rugged terrain, ancient glaciers, and serene valleys. You'll encounter geological formations of hard, coarse-grained rock like gabbro, shaped by heavy glaciation. Peaks like Glittertind are known for their glacier-carved landscapes and the shimmering effect of their icy surfaces. Many routes also feature snowfields, alpine tundra, and stunning high-altitude lakes.
The best time to visit the mountain peaks around Lom for hiking is generally during the summer months, typically from late June to early September. During this period, snow has largely melted from lower and mid-altitudes, and the weather is more stable, making routes like Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind more accessible. However, even in summer, be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather and potential snowfields at higher elevations.
Yes, while many peaks are challenging, there are options for families. The ascent to Lomseggen, which starts directly from Lom town center, is a well-marked trail that offers majestic views and is more accessible for a day hike. While not explicitly listed as 'family-friendly' in the data, its proximity and well-marked path make it a suitable option for families with some hiking experience. Always assess the difficulty and conditions before embarking on any hike with children.
Generally, you do not need a permit for hiking in Jotunheimen National Park. However, for safety reasons, crossing the Styggebreen glacier on the route to Galdhøpiggen from Juvasshytta requires a guided tour. It's always advisable to check local regulations for any specific areas or conditions, especially if planning to traverse glaciers or particularly challenging terrain.
Beyond hiking, the region around Lom offers various outdoor activities. You can explore cycling routes, such as the 'Glacial Lake Near Galdhøpiggen' loop or the 'Lom Stave Church – Sognefjellshytta' loop, detailed in the Cycling around Lom guide. There are also mountaineering opportunities, particularly in the Hurrungane range for experienced climbers, and specific mountain hikes like the 'Spiterstulen Lodge – Glittertind loop' found in the Mountain Hikes around Lom guide.
The most challenging peaks around Lom include Galdhøpiggen, especially the longer route from Spiterstulen or the glacier crossing from Juvasshytta. Besseggen Ridge is also a demanding hike requiring sure-footedness. For experienced mountaineers seeking technical challenges, peaks in the Hurrungane range, such as Store Styggedalstinden, offer more advanced climbing opportunities.
Glittertind is Norway's second-highest mountain. The ascent is physically demanding but technically considered easy in good weather. The route from Glitterheim cabin is popular, involving rocky terrain and alpine tundra, often taking 4-5 hours one way. Be aware that the summit may have bare ice, and crampons might be recommended. Always maintain distance from overhanging snow cornices, especially in poor visibility.
While the most famous peaks like Galdhøpiggen and Besseggen can be popular, exploring other areas or less direct routes can offer a quieter experience. For example, while Lomseggen is local, it might be less crowded than the highest peaks. The Hurrungane range, home to peaks like Store Styggedalstinden, is known for its challenging ascents, which naturally attract fewer casual hikers, offering a more secluded alpine experience for experienced mountaineers.
Visitors consistently praise the incredible views from the ridges and summits, the sense of adventure, and the immersion in Norway's rugged natural beauty. The opportunity to stand on Scandinavia's highest peak, Galdhøpiggen, or traverse the iconic Besseggen Ridge, are frequently highlighted. The diverse terrain, from glaciers to alpine tundra, and the well-maintained trails also contribute to a highly appreciated outdoor experience.
