Tips from the Community

Christine🔹
May 12, 2026, Temple Church

The old church of the Order of the Templars was not destroyed by the Great Fire, but was heavily damaged by lightning! The special feature is the knight's graves set into the floor - some of the men served Richard the Lionheart, who is not buried here, but is said to have often lingered in the church. While the Lionheart was on crusade, the knight William Marshall ruled for him - check out his tomb slab! Sometimes the narrow spiral staircase to the upper floor of the church is open, sometimes not. Luck of the draw. The view from above is well worth the climb. The gruesome grimaces, staged super creepily in "The Da Vinci Code", seem bizarre rather than frightening today. They were probably meant to ward off evil spirits. Admission 5 pounds, opening hours not necessarily reliable on the internet, private gatherings often take place.

1162: the Round Church was built to be London’s Jerusalem. 1214–19: Magna Carta was negotiated in the Temple, and its greatest hero was buried in the Church. 1584, 1776, 1787: from Raleigh’s expeditions through the colonial constitutions to the American Declaration of Independence and Constitution, the Temple was the birthplace of American Law. And to this day the Church serves the legal colleges Inner and Middle Temple, London’s residents, visiting jurists and travellers from all over the world with some of the most uplifting services, music and discussions in London. https://www.templechurch.com/
