The present church may be the third to have been built on the site. The first recorded date of a Church in South Hykeham was 1138. The west tower was constructed in the 13th or 14th Century. In 1866 the St Michaelās and All Angels Church spire was struck by lightening. This was repaired and a programme of restoration commenced in 1869 including the erection of the south porch, removal of a gallery and installation of new windows. The interior was also improved and acquired its Victorian features.

RAF Swinderby 1940 - 1993 was sold in 1994. The technical site is now an industrial estate and the domestic site became the village of Withal St Hughs. The airfield remains and is disused. During the second world war, No. 300 Polish Bomber Squadron and No. 301 Polish Bomber Squadron operated out of Swinderby. From 1964 until July 1993 RAF Swinderby was the home to RAF basic training for all male enlisted personnel prior to their trade training. Female enlisted personnel training moved from RAF Hereford to RAF Swinderby in 1976. I was one of the fresh faced 18 year olds who undertook my RAF basic training at Swinderby.

The church is predominately Norman and Early English, however there have been a number of restorations carried out. The settlement of Swinderby, which is referred to in the Domesday Book as Sundry and Suindrebi, probably dates back to Roman times due to its proximity to the Fosse Way.
