A quiet road through a beautiful area, partly following an old (dismantled) railway line. I was surprised that this road isn't on the map/OSM, even though it's a public road.

Julian Bower is a great example of a well preserved turf maze with its sunken form demonstrating its great age. It is thought that the maze was cut by Spalding Priory before 1220. It is one of few surviving turf mazed believed to be from the medieval period.

Set in a converted barn The Paddocks Tearoom offers delicious home cooked snacks, farmhouse lunches and freshly baked cakes all prepared on the premises. It's a small tea room, but very popular, so if you're part of a larger group give them a call to pre-book on 01724 721642.

Many walkers start from the public car park at the Burton-upon-Stather picnic area, which is also the starting point for several trails. For other routes, on-street parking may be available in the village, but please be considerate of local residents. Some trails starting further afield, like near Normanby Hall Country Park, will have their own dedicated parking facilities.
Yes, the area offers several gentle options perfect for a family day out. The Burton upon Stather Public Footpath Trail is a self-guided route designed to help you discover local wildlife. For a mix of activities, the nearby Normanby Hall Country Park has accessible paths, a deer sanctuary, and play areas, making it a great choice for families with children.
Most trails in the area are dog-friendly, but it's always best to keep your dog on a lead, especially near farmland with livestock and in nature reserves like Alkborough Flats to protect nesting birds. The Alkborough Trail is noted by walkers as being great for dogs, though some sections offer little shade.
The landscape is quite varied. You'll find a mix of riverside paths along the Trent, trails through deciduous woodland, and routes along a prominent limestone escarpment. The escarpment paths offer the best views but involve some gentle climbs. Most trails are on well-trodden footpaths, but some sections can be muddy after rain.
Yes, many of the popular routes are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish in the same place without retracing your steps. For example, the Disused Railway and Tunnel loop from Burton upon Stather is a well-liked circular walk that combines woodland and local history.
The woodlands and wetlands are rich in wildlife. The woods are a habitat for various birds and butterflies, especially in spring and summer. For serious birdwatching, a visit to the Alkborough Flats nature reserve is highly recommended, where you can see a wide range of waders and waterfowl from dedicated hides.
Certainly. For a full day of hiking, consider the St John the Baptist Church – Julian's Bower Turf Maze loop from Alkborough. At nearly 10 miles (15.4 km), it's a substantial walk that takes you through open fields and along the river. The South Humber Heritage Trail also offers opportunities for long-distance walking.
The area is rich in history. Many trails pass near Julian's Bower, a unique medieval turf maze in Alkborough. You can also discover Kell Well, an ancient spring, while walking along the ridge. The routes often provide views of the historic St. Andrew's Church in Burton Upon Stather itself.
For a quieter experience, explore the network of public footpaths away from the main named trails. Atkinsons' Warren Local Nature Reserve offers a peaceful setting with woodland and grassland paths that are generally less busy. Exploring the smaller trails branching off the main routes to Alkborough can also lead to more secluded spots.
The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with over 1,100 hikers exploring the area. Reviewers often praise the stunning views across the River Trent from the escarpment path and the peaceful atmosphere of the woodland sections. The mix of riverside scenery and historical landmarks is a frequently mentioned highlight.
Hiking is enjoyable year-round, but spring is particularly beautiful when the woodlands are full of life and the gorse blossom adds a splash of yellow to the landscape. Autumn offers lovely colours in the deciduous woods. Summer is great for long days, but be aware that some paths along the ridge are quite exposed to the sun.
