Mesi Bridge (Albanian: Ura e Mesit "The bridge in the middle") is a bridge in the village of Mes, about 5 km (3.1 mi) (as the crow flies) northeast of Shkodër, in northwestern Albania. It is a monument of Postribë culture, turning the site into a tourist attraction with a lot of visitors from all around the world. For foreigners the architecture of the bridge is intriguing with round slick stones and stone plates. The surrounding panorama gives the bridge an even more picturesque view. The Albanian Development Fund invested 13 million lekë so the tourists could step on the bridge and watch it closely because there was no entry way to the bridge. It was built in the 18th century, around 1770, by Kara Mahmud Bushati, the local Ottoman pasha, and spans the Kir River. The building was divided in 2 phases where the first phase was only the middle arc and the arc near it and the second phase included the other 11 arches. The purpose was to connect the city of Shkodër with the city of Drisht and other cities of the northern side. It is 108m long, 3.4 meters wide, 12.5 meters high with 13 arches, and is one of the longest examples of an Ottoman bridge in the region. It was built as part of the road that goes up the Kir Valley, eventually to Pristina.

The Abu Bakr Mosque is the largest mosque in Shkodër. It was built at the end of the 20th century, on the site of the previous Fushë Çela Mosque, destroyed during the communist period.

There are over 15 dedicated running routes around the Drin region, offering a variety of experiences. These routes are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 10 reviews.
Yes, the Drin region offers several easy jogging trails perfect for beginners. For instance, the Running loop from Shëngjin is an easy 4.9 km (3.0 miles) path, and the Stone Pathway in Macedonia loop from Kalishta is another easy option at 5.0 km (3.1 miles).
The Drin region boasts incredibly diverse landscapes. You'll find mountainous terrain, deep gorges, and canyons, especially along the Dinaric Alps. Many routes follow the Drin River itself, or skirt the shores of large artificial lakes like Fierza and Koman, offering picturesque waterside paths. The Drin Delta also provides a unique coastal running experience.
Many of the running routes in Drin are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish in the same location. Popular circular options include the Lake Shkodër loop from Castle of Rozafa, which is 11.3 km (7.0 miles), and the Arta's beach loop from Shëngjin, covering 9.8 km (6.1 miles) of coastal scenery.
The Drin region is rich in natural beauty and historical sites. Along your runs, you might encounter the Source of the Black Drin, or enjoy views of Lake Koman and Globočica Lake. Historical sites like the Castle of Rozafa are also prominent features on some routes, such as the Rozafa Castle – Abu Bakr Mosque loop from Shkoder.
Running trails in Drin vary in length, catering to different preferences. You'll find routes ranging from shorter, easy loops around 5 km (3 miles) to moderate trails up to 11 km (7 miles). Most moderate routes can be completed within 1 to 1.5 hours, while shorter ones take less than an hour.
While specific 'family-friendly' designations are not always explicit, the presence of easy, shorter loops with minimal elevation gain, such as the Running loop from Shëngjin, suggests that many paths could be enjoyable for families looking for a gentle jog or walk together. The scenic lakefront and coastal paths offer pleasant environments for all ages.
Yes, the Drin River is a central feature of the region, and many routes incorporate riverine paths. The basin is characterized by the Drin River and its tributaries, so you'll frequently find yourself running alongside or with views of this major waterway, especially near its confluence points and where it forms large lakes.
Given the mountainous terrain and the presence of large bodies of water, spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions for jogging in the Drin region. Temperatures are milder, and the natural scenery is vibrant. Summer can be warm, especially in lower elevations, while winter might bring colder temperatures and potentially snow in higher mountainous areas.
While some popular routes, especially those near major towns or attractions like Lake Shkodër, might see more activity, the Drin region offers a vast and diverse landscape. Exploring routes slightly off the main tourist paths or visiting during off-peak hours can help you find quieter, more serene running experiences amidst nature.
While the guide focuses on the natural trails, routes passing through or near towns like Shkoder or Shëngjin will likely have access to local cafes and amenities. For routes in more remote, natural areas, it's advisable to carry your own water and snacks, as dedicated facilities might be sparse.
