Excellent summit, run from either the car park below or over the ridge from Weavering Down. The top is rocky with great views over towards the Mendips, out to Weston Super Mare and the sea and down the M5.

The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the variety of scenery, from the panoramic views across the Mendip Hills to the peaceful woodland paths and refreshing coastal walks.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the area?

Certainly. For a shorter, gentler walk that's suitable for most family members, consider the Bleadon Hill Golf Course loop from Bleadon. It's a relatively short circular route that still offers a bit of elevation for some nice local views without being too strenuous.

Where can I find a hike with the best views?

For some of the most rewarding panoramic views, you'll want to head into the Mendip Hills. A challenging but spectacular option is the Crook Peak – Wavering Down Trig Point loop from Banwell. The ascent is significant, but you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas over the Somerset Levels and Bristol Channel.

Can I take my dog on the trails around Locking?

Yes, the area is generally dog-friendly. Many trails, especially through local woodlands and across the Mendip Hills, are great for walking with a dog. However, always be mindful of livestock, especially in fields around the Mendips, and keep your dog on a lead where required. Coastal paths are also a good option, but check for any seasonal restrictions on beaches.

Are there any good coastal walks nearby?

Yes, the coast near Weston-super-Mare offers some excellent walking. A popular choice is the Marine Lake – SEE MONSTER loop from Weston Milton. This is a fairly flat and accessible route that lets you enjoy the sea air and views along the promenade.

What about woodland hikes?

The area has several beautiful woodland walks. The Worlebury Hill Fort – Weston Woods Woodland Walk loop from Weston Milton is a fantastic choice, taking you through the historic Weston Woods and past an Iron Age hillfort. For another option, King's Wood offers a large, tranquil forest setting, especially known for its bluebells in spring.

What is the terrain like for hiking around Locking?

The terrain is quite varied. You can expect everything from flat, paved coastal promenades near Weston-super-Mare to gentle, rolling countryside paths. The main challenge comes from the Mendip Hills, which feature steep, rocky ascents and uneven ground, requiring sturdy footwear and a good level of fitness.

When is the best time of year to hike here?

You can hike around Locking year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly pleasant. Spring brings wildflowers, like the bluebells in King's Wood, while autumn offers beautiful colours. Summer is great for long days and coastal walks, but popular spots can be busy. Winter hiking is possible, but be prepared for muddy conditions and shorter daylight hours.

What should I pack for a hike in this region?

Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential, especially for the uneven and often muddy trails in the Mendips. Always carry waterproof clothing, as the weather can change quickly. For longer routes, bring plenty of water and snacks. A map or a fully charged phone with the komoot app is also highly recommended for navigation.

Is it easy to find parking for the trails?

Parking availability varies. For popular spots like Crook Peak or Sand Point, there are dedicated car parks, but they can fill up quickly on weekends. Many trailheads start from villages like Locking or Banwell, where you'll rely on street parking, so please park considerately. It's always a good idea to arrive early to secure a spot.
