To prevent further erosion of the Salzach, a plan for sill steps was developed between Hallein and Salzburg after the flood in 1959, which also caused the collapse of the motorway bridge in Salzburg. This plan envisaged three sill steps. One of these sill steps was to be created in the Puch area. In 1964, considerations began to build a run-of-river power plant instead of the Puch sill step, which was completed in 1971.
