ensure you have a good waterproof coat, don't go up when it's to dark as it's very rocky and uneven you would get very lost, in the summer it's amazing with great picnic spots and then it's very hot so sun cream needed definitely.

Super quiet little pocket of history just below the main Tor.

This tor is just a stone's throw from the nearby car park and towers over Dartmoor. Very impressive, good for a short tour, as a starting point for visiting other tors, for a picnic (depending on the unpredictable weather here 😉) or recently also for climbing (you could see a few people free climbing - but I can't say for sure whether it's allowed) and for treasure hunts. Otherwise just beautiful nature and (outside of tourist times) nice and quiet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the hiking trails around Buckland in the Moor suitable for dogs?

Yes, Dartmoor is generally very dog-friendly, but there are important considerations. Your dog should be kept on a lead, especially between March 1st and July 31st, to protect ground-nesting birds. Also be aware of livestock grazing freely on the moors. Many trails are suitable, but always ensure you have enough water for your dog.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the area?

Certainly. The region offers several gentler options perfect for families. For a very short and accessible outing, consider the Welstor Rock loop from River Ashburn. It's a pleasant 2-mile (3.2 km) walk through fields and woods that can be completed in under an hour.

What should I wear for a hike on Dartmoor?

The weather on Dartmoor can change very quickly, so it's essential to be prepared. Always wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip. Layering is key: start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece or warm mid-layer, and always carry a waterproof and windproof jacket, even if the day starts sunny.

A hat and gloves are recommended year-round. For navigation, a map and compass are vital, as phone signal can be unreliable on the open moor.

Where can I find circular walks starting near Buckland in the Moor?

Most of the trails in this area are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A great example of a moderate circular hike is the Saddle Tor – Haytor Rocks loop from River Ashburn, which takes you across classic Dartmoor terrain to two prominent tors.

What are the Ten Commandments Stones?

The Ten Commandments Stones are a unique local landmark found near Buckland Beacon. In 1928, the Lord of Buckland Manor, William Whitley, had the Ten Commandments carved into two large granite slabs to celebrate the rejection of a revised Book of Common Prayer. They are a popular feature on many walks that ascend to the beacon.

Is there parking available for the main hiking trails?

Yes, there are several car parks that serve as popular starting points for hikes. The car park near Haytor Rocks is a well-known spot for accessing many trails. You can also find parking at Hemsworthy Gate and near New Bridge. Arrive early on weekends and holidays as these spots can fill up quickly.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced walkers?

For those seeking a more strenuous day out, the area offers some demanding routes. The Haytor Granite Tramway – Becka Brook loop from River Ashburn is a difficult, long-distance trail of nearly 12 miles (19 km). It follows parts of a historic tramway and involves significant elevation gain, rewarding hikers with a real sense of accomplishment.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Buckland in the Moor?

Are there any good spots for a pub lunch after a hike?

While there are no pubs listed directly in our data, the nearby towns and villages surrounding the moors, such as Ashburton and Widecombe in the Moor, are known for their traditional pubs. These often serve as welcome stops for hikers looking for a meal and a drink after exploring the trails.

Can I go wild swimming near Buckland in the Moor?

Yes, the River Dart offers some popular spots for wild swimming. Spitchwick, located near New Bridge, is a particularly well-loved location. It features picturesque river pools and is a great place to cool off on a warm day after a hike through the nearby woods.

What are the most notable natural features to see while hiking?

You will also encounter expansive open moorland, offering breathtaking views, and lush, wooded river valleys like the Dart Gorge, which provide a beautiful contrast.
