Saint Stephen (or in another spelling Stephan, both variants also partly with the Latin ending "...us"), patron saint of this church in the place of the same name, is one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem community and is the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church commemorates him on the second day of Christmas, December 26th. When Stephen expressed his vision of the open heaven "But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts chapter 7 verse 55), the people were so outraged that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

Gun smoke, cannons and soldiers everywhere. The French had 15,000 men. On the Austrian side, a little more than half, namely 8,000, had to face the enemy. As is well known, it ended in defeat for Austria due to tactical errors and the French were able to continue their march through Styria unhindered. The cross As you can read on the inscription, it was originally erected in 1860, and was renovated in 1981 by the St. Michael Tourist Association. Legend has it that wounded soldiers gathered at this place. On the right of the cross there is a note for hikers who pass by: "Here you can rest - but also pray to your God with simple words the sacred rustling of the forest sounds jubilantly in festive chords."

I did the hike on Thursday because hurricane-force winds were forecast in the mountains on Friday. I was very surprised when I had to brave hurricane-force winds near the summit on Thursday afternoon, especially at the summit. The storm was so strong that I had trouble standing upright. In addition, the hurricane almost knocked over the electric jeep, even though it weighs about 7 kilograms. The storm also almost tore the camera out of my hands. But that didn't stop me from enjoying climbing the summit. The view from the Lärchkogel is fantastic. Next summer I will definitely hike over the Lärchkogel to the Speikkogel.

A rather easier mountain tour starting from the P1 car park. The tour could also be described as a hike. However, I prefer the term mountain tour because the summit is at almost 1900 meters. A fantastic all-round view awaits you at the summit, which is only obscured to the west by the Speikkogel and the Lenzmoarkogel.
