Bernhard Riedmiller was born on June 5, 1757, in Illerbachen near Memmingen. As the son of a wealthy farmer, he came to Vorarlberg and acquired the inn "Krone" in Bludenz in 1789, which he ran until 1809. In addition to his work as an innkeeper, Riedmiller was involved in the military early on. In 1796, he became captain of the Bludenz rifle company. He particularly distinguished himself in 1799 when Vorarlberg riflemen, together with Austrian troops, forced the numerically superior French to retreat at Feldkirch. During the Tyrolean People's Uprising of 1809, Riedmiller was among the eight men commissioned by the state parliament to organize the defense of the state. After several successful engagements, he had to retreat to Tyrol. He participated in the third Oberinntal. After the collapse of the uprising, Riedmiller first fled to Switzerland and then to Vienna.

The Church of the Holy Cross in Bludenz, Vorarlberg, originated from the desire to provide a larger church for the growing population. The town parish church had become too small, which is why a church building association was founded on March 19, 1911. The planning was carried out by the Stuttgart architect Otto Linder. Despite the difficult years of the First World War, the construction project was prepared; the foundation stone was finally laid on July 3, 1932. On October 14, 1934, the new church was solemnly consecrated by State Bishop Dr. Sigismund Waitz. The spacious church interior offers around 800 seats and 1,000 standing places, making it suitable for large services and religious celebrations. The total costs at the time amounted to approximately 600,000 Reichsmarks or Swiss francs. To this day, the Church of the Holy Cross is an important place of faith and a defining structure in the cityscape of Bludenz.
