A challenging climb with a great view; you can save yourself the €3.50 entrance fee to the fortress. If you're in good shape, the climb can be completed in 30 minutes, otherwise it will take longer.

Above the town, at the top of Dinara Mountain ⛰️, are the ancient remains of the 15th-century Starigrad Fortress, an important strategic location during the pirate era 🏴☠️. Two different paths lead up. Once at the top, you are rewarded with a breathtaking view 👀. The view over the estuary, the sea, the mountains, and the town is indescribable 🤩. The entrance fee is €3.50 (as of June 2026). If you get thirsty from the climb, you can buy a cold water for €2 👍🏼. The castle tower is accessible via a ladder. It is strongly recommended to wear sturdy shoes and avoid the midday heat.

Komoot features over 120 mountaineering routes across Croatia, offering a wide range of options for different skill levels. You'll find everything from moderate paths to challenging alpine ascents.
While many routes are challenging, some areas offer more accessible options. For instance, the Kozjak Lake – Plitvice Lakes National Park loop from Plitvička Jezera is a moderate route that explores the scenic Plitvice Lakes National Park, which can be suitable for families with some hiking experience. The Premužić Trail in Northern Velebit National Park is also known for being accessible through rugged areas, offering stunning views without extreme difficulty.
Croatia offers numerous difficult routes for experienced mountaineers. The Cica Voda Spring – View of Paklenica Gorge loop from Starigrad Paklenica is a demanding path with expansive views. Other challenging options include the Adolfovac Mountain Shelter – Puntijarka Mountain Hut loop from Podsljeme and the Rocky Trail in Croatia loop from Orebić. Paklenica National Park, in particular, is renowned for its alpine ascents to peaks like Vaganski Vrh and Sveto Brdo.
Yes, many mountaineering routes in Croatia are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the moderate View of Kvarner Bay – Vojak Stone Tower loop from Vela Učka, the challenging Höhle K03 0604 L11m loop from Ključ, and the Baška Harbor – Vrženica Bay loop from Baška.
Croatia's mountaineering routes are rich with natural beauty. You can explore dramatic karst formations, dense forests, and breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. Specific highlights include the impressive crags and deep pits of the Velebit Mountain Range, the limestone canyons of Paklenica National Park, and the cascading waterfalls found in areas like Plitvice Lakes National Park. You might also encounter unique geological features like the Zarečki Krov Waterfalls and Cave.
Yes, some routes pass by or are close to interesting historical sites. For example, the Fortica Via Ferrata – Fortica Fortress (Omiš) loop from Omiš leads to the historic Fortica Fortress. You might also find old mines like the Zrinski Mine in some regions, offering a glimpse into the area's past.
The best time for mountaineering in Croatia generally depends on the specific region and altitude. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making them ideal for most trails. Summer can be very hot, especially in coastal areas and lower elevations, but higher mountain ranges like Velebit and Dinara offer cooler conditions. Winter mountaineering is possible in some areas, particularly in the Dinaric Alps, but requires appropriate gear and experience due to snow and ice.
Yes, most national parks in Croatia, such as Northern Velebit National Park and Paklenica National Park, require an entrance fee or permit. It's advisable to check the specific park's official website for current regulations, fees, and any booking requirements before your visit.
The mountaineering routes in Croatia are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.8 stars from over 120 reviews. Reviewers often praise the diverse landscapes, from rugged karst formations and dense forests to panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea. The variety of routes, catering to different ability levels, is also frequently highlighted.
Absolutely! Many routes, especially those in the Velebit Mountain Range and along the coast, offer spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea and its islands. The View of Kvarner Bay – Vojak Stone Tower loop from Vela Učka is a prime example, providing stunning vistas over the Kvarner Bay.
While specific 'hidden gems' are subjective, exploring routes in less-known parts of the Dinaric Alps or some of the longer, multi-day trails like sections of the Velebit Hiking Trail (VPP) or the Via Dinarica can lead to more secluded experiences. The Cica Voda Spring – Ivancev Dom loop from Jurnović mill might offer a less crowded experience compared to the more popular national park trails.
