No kidding, beautiful deciduous forest all the way, until it opens out onto open moor land. A proper multi stage climb, lots of intermediate shallow sections to catch the breath, and a great surface throughout. Good descent with few blind corners. I descended around midday on a bank holiday and encountered a dad and child doing the climb - fair play - and one car, when you can hear how busy the A39 is in the distance. So safe to say usually quiet.

The river that flows down Holford Combe is very pretty. The steep wooded valley has a wide flat base with the river and trail flowing down it, perfect for a picnic or to stop for a play with the kids.

Definitely. There are many shorter, less strenuous options suitable for all skill levels. For a very accessible outing, consider the Nether Stowey & Stowey Castle loop — Quantock Hills. At just 1.5 miles (2.3 km), it's a manageable walk that still offers a sense of history and countryside charm.
Yes, the region is generally dog-friendly. Many trails, like those in Great Wood and Ebbor Gorge, are popular with dog walkers. However, you'll be walking through farmland with livestock and sensitive nature reserves, so it's essential to keep your dog under control and on a lead where required. Always be prepared to clean up after your pet as bins are not always available on the trails.
For expansive, panoramic views, head into the Quantock Hills AONB. Summits like Bicknoller Post offer vistas across the moorland towards the Bristol Channel, and on clear days, you can see as far as Exmoor and the Mendips. The hike to Bossington Hill is also highly regarded by locals for its stunning coastal viewpoints.
Yes, for experienced hikers looking for a challenge, there are several substantial routes. The Bird Hide – Fenlyn's Clyce loop from Combwich is a demanding trek of over 13 miles (21 km) that explores the unique landscape around the marshes.
Fiddington is very close to the Quantock Hills. Many trails start from nearby villages like Nether Stowey, which serve as gateways to the AONB. You can drive a short distance to a trailhead car park or choose a route that connects directly from the surrounding lowlands into the hills, such as the Nether Stowey, Over Stowey & Stowey Castle loop.
Yes, the proximity to the Bristol Channel and Bridgwater Bay means there are excellent waterside hiking options. The WWT Steart Marshes offer a unique landscape of wetlands and coastline. A good route to explore this area is the WWT Steart Marshes loop from Somerset, which is a long but relatively flat walk through a significant habitat for birdlife.
