Its great to see Molly's Community Café in Steeple Claydon avoided closure thanks to a collective effort. A significant part of the funding came from HS2's Community and Environment Fund, which awarded the cafe a £75,000 grant. This fund was set up to help offset the disruption caused by the construction of the high-speed rail link. Additionally, Unita Hopkins, the daughter of Molly Lewis (who originally ran the newsagents on the site), chose to donate the building back to the community for the creation of the cafe. The cafe operates as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, and it's also run with the help of volunteers under the guidance of a full-time manager. In July 2024, a public meeting was held to address the challenging financial position that would arise as the lease expired and the business started to pay rent. A small group of volunteers with relevant skills are working with the cafe manager and directors to implement suggestions to ensure its continued viabilit

The Church was attacked by Cromwell and his men in the civil war of 1643. Some of the Royalist garrison had taken refuge there and you can still see the bullet holes in the 15th century door made by the attacking Roundheads.

This guide focuses on the hikes around the village of Godington in Oxfordshire, near the border with Buckinghamshire. It covers the rural countryside in this area, not Goddington in London or Godinton in Kent.
Yes, there are over 130 routes to explore in the Godington area. The trails are mostly a mix of easy and moderate, with no difficult alpine hikes, making it an accessible region for most walkers.
The landscape is defined by classic Oxfordshire countryside. Expect gently rolling terrain, agricultural fields, and quiet footpaths, many of which are relatively flat. Some trails follow the scenic Birne brook or pass through small patches of woodland.
Most of the popular trails in the area are loops that start and end in the same place. A good example of a shorter circular route is the Deer Pen – Bench loop from Hillesden, which is under 3 miles and perfect for a quick outing.
Dogs are generally welcome on the public footpaths around Godington. However, the routes often cross agricultural land, so you will likely encounter livestock. It's essential to keep your dog on a lead and under control in these areas.
Absolutely. The region has over 90 easy-rated hikes. The terrain is mostly flat, making it suitable for walkers of all ages. For a simple and enjoyable walk, consider The Wonky Bench – Pathway Through Woodland loop from Southwold, which is about 3 miles long with very little elevation change.
The area is well-regarded by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside and the quiet, accessible footpaths that are perfect for escaping the crowds.
Most hikes start from small villages like Fringford, Hillesden, or near Bicester. Parking is typically available on the street in these villages, but can be limited. Always park considerately, ensuring you do not block access for local residents. Public transport options are sparse, so arriving by car is recommended.
The routes follow a network of public footpaths which are generally marked. However, signage can vary in quality and visibility, especially on less-trafficked paths. We always recommend using a GPS device or the komoot app to navigate your chosen route confidently.
While the immediate village of Godington is very small, you can find traditional country pubs in nearby villages such as Fringford, Stratton Audley, and Steeple Claydon. These are just a short drive from most trailheads and offer a great way to round off a day's walking.
Hiking is possible year-round. Spring and summer offer pleasant weather and vibrant green landscapes. Autumn provides beautiful colours in the woodlands. The paths can become muddy in winter and after heavy rain, so waterproof footwear is essential during these periods.
