...the "Lion Fountain" on Münsterplatz in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg. ... - The octagonal cast-iron fountain from 1773 replaced a stone trough from the Renaissance period. - With a richly decorated fountain column, presumably from the 16th century, and fountain figure. - The fountain was renovated/restored in 1981/1982 and 2018. For those interested: 1. The fountain figure - is a lion holding two shields: on the right, the black double-headed eagle with the Habsburg escutcheon, and on the left, the coat of arms of Schwäbisch Gmünd (a unicorn). - A hound's head peeks out between them. - The original dated from 1610 (now stored in the Scheffold Gymnasium). - The current copy dates from 1982 and is by the Gmünd sculptor Franz Huber. 2. The fountain trough/basin - The fountain trough is decorated with colorful coats of arms of Schwäbisch Gmünd. Family coats of arms - One coat of arms belongs to the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd (unicorn and the year 1773), and ten other coats of arms are attributed to members of the city council who distinguished themselves as donors during the fountain's construction in 1773. - The coats of arms reliefs are by the sculptor Johann Ludwig (Ellwangen) and were restored in 1982 by the Schwäbisch Gmünd artist Max Bader. 3. The fountain column - Displays Renaissance motifs - Sea creatures are depicted in the central section - So-called faun masks (creatures with human and animal features) adorn the lower part of the column - Four pipes with beautiful tendril-like projections protrude from the faun masks; they come from the foundry of Victor Gerold in Nuremberg.

A few steps to the right of the station forecourt are three crude metallic figures, each of which appears quite different depending on the daylight. These bodies are examples of the current, diverse artistic life in the old Hohenstaufen town.
