The Birnau Church towers high above Lake Constance as a landmark. This striking church is usually recognized from the lake or from the road above. Few know it as the site of the Margrave of Baden's wine from Salem. A visit inside is worthwhile.

The Birnau Pilgrimage Church is a Baroque church under the patronage of Mary (Ascension, August 15th, and Visitation, July 2nd) on the northern shore of Lake Constance between the towns of Nussdorf and Uhldingen-Mühlhofen in Baden-Württemberg. The church is located in Birnau on the western route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Road, directly below the B 31 federal highway. It was built between 1746 and 1749 by the Vorarlberg master builder Peter Thumb for the Imperial Abbey of Salem. It features a rich Baroque interior, including frescoes by Gottfried Bernhard Götz, as well as stuccoes, altars, and sculptures by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer, the most famous of which is the Honey Licker, a putto with a beehive. Since 1946, the church has also served as the parish church for the towns of Deisendorf and Nussdorf; in 1971, it was elevated to a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI. The order building in front of the church with its striking bell tower now houses a priory of the Cistercian Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau.

The first farm buildings on this site were first documented in 1155. They served as a farmstead (granary) and a boat landing stage for Salem Abbey. The expansion to its present prestigious appearance took place after 1722 under Salem's Abbot Stephan I. Jung. After the expansion, the estate included a residential wing, a chapel, farm buildings, and a garden. The staff who cultivated the surrounding vineyards also lived there. Many abbots preferred Maurach as a summer residence to Salem, which was located further inland. The abbey used the buildings as a transshipment point for goods that were delivered or picked up directly by ship. The so-called "Prelate's Way" led from Maurach to Salem, along which not only the abbots traveled, but also goods were transported. Maurach played an important role in the abbey's economic life, as no toll had to be paid for the transport of goods to the lake. With the secularization of the monastery in 1804, the buildings fell to the Margraviate of Baden. In 1919, they were purchased by the Cistercians of the Bregenz Territorial Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau, along with the Birnau pilgrimage church.
