Angerberg Castle, which belonged to Wilhelm von Schönanger, used to stand on this hill. Because of his services, Wilhelm was made sub-vogt of the Bamberg estates by the then Count Albach of Bavaria. This also includes the area on the Ilz. However, Wilhelm now developed into a robber baron, his raids started from the castle - far around to Passau and Niederalteich. On July 23, 1244, peace was made with the count and court was held over all robber castles. So Wilhelm's two sons were handed over to the bishop of Passau as hostages and he himself was not allowed to fortify his castle any further. However, he did not stop his robberies, so he was beheaded in Passau in 1257 and the castle was completely destroyed in 1262. Today you can only see the three ramparts and the foundation walls of a castle tower of the castle complex.
