Remains of the medieval Dominican priory on the west side of Carlingford, recognisable by its high, narrow windows and the elongated ruin wing in grey stone. The site lies quietly just outside the centre, with views of the hills and the open grass around the old priory walls.

This charming seaside town overlooks the Mourne Mountains, whose silhouette rises along the coast of Northern Ireland. Carlingford is very lively at weekends thanks to its many pubs and restaurants, which attract visitors from the north, and is famous for its oysters. The village has several historical sights, such as the small King John's Castle, with its romantic silhouette overlooking the sea, and Taaffe's Castle, a former 16th-century merchant's house located a little further from the quay.

The Tholsel is undoubtedly one of the most unique structures in the heart of Carlingford. This medieval city gate, originally built in the 15th century, is the only remaining gate from the original town wall and served for centuries as the ceremonial and administrative entrance to the town.

The northwest top of Slieve Foye is a little lower at 535 m (1,755 ft), but the ridge is fun and you can combine the two summits and make a great loop.

The trails offer a wide range of difficulties. You'll find everything from easy, relatively flat walks to challenging mountain ascents. Out of more than 25 routes in the area, about half are rated as easy, with the rest split between moderate and difficult climbs in the Mourne Mountains.
Yes, many trails in the region are loop walks. For a moderately challenging circular route with great views, consider the Eagle Mountain loop from Attical. It's a great example of the rewarding mountain loops available in the Mournes.
The area around the Silent Valley Reservoir is excellent for families. It features several well-maintained, shorter trails with relatively little climbing. The paths are often paved, making them suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities, and the reservoir and dam provide interesting sights for children.
Dogs are often welcome on trails in the Mournes, but it's crucial to be mindful of the environment. This is an active farming region, so you will likely encounter livestock. Always keep your dog on a lead, especially during lambing season (typically spring), and be prepared to follow local signage regarding canine access.
The landscape is defined by the dramatic granite peaks of the Mourne Mountains, heather-covered slopes, and stunning views over Carlingford Lough. You'll also find historic features like the Mourne Wall and impressive Victorian engineering at the Silent Valley Reservoir.
While the region is more known for its mountains and loughs than for large waterfalls, many of the mountain streams and rivers create beautiful cascades, especially after rainfall. Exploring trails that follow river valleys, such as those around the Silent Valley, will give you the best chance to see them.
The hiking routes around Benagh Lower are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. Reviewers frequently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the summits and the unique character of the granite mountain landscape.
For a rewarding walk without a major mountain climb, the Carlingford – The Tholsel, Carlingford loop from Carlingford is a great option. This moderate trail offers lovely coastal scenery and views towards the mountains with less than 250 meters of elevation gain.
The weather in the Mournes can change very quickly. It's essential to wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip. Always bring waterproof and windproof layers, even if the day starts sunny. Wearing layers of clothing (e.g., a base layer, fleece, and outer shell) allows you to adapt to changing temperatures.
Parking availability varies by trailhead. Popular starting points like the Silent Valley Reservoir and the main car park for Slieve Foye have dedicated parking areas, which can fill up on weekends. For less-trafficked routes, parking may be limited to small lay-bys on the roadside. It's always best to arrive early to secure a spot.
Accessing trailheads directly via public transport can be challenging in this rural area. Main towns like Kilkeel and Carlingford are served by bus routes, but you may need to walk a considerable distance or take a taxi from the town to the start of your hike. Planning your route from one of these towns is your best option.
