The Dundrum Coastal Path provides a beautiful 2.5km stretch of coastal walking along a disused railway line on the western shore of Dundrum Inner Bay. Enjoy delightful views of the bay and the Mournes as you make your way along this well-maintained path.

The beautiful Dundrum Castle is located on a hilltop near Dundrum village. Its elevated position provides fantastic panoramic views across Dundrum, the Carrigs Estuary, the Mourne Mountain range and out to the Irish Sea. The castle itself was constructed by John de Courcy at the beginning of the 13th century. It's a fine example of a historic medieval castle of its time.

You can expect moderate ascents and descents on gravel and grass, especially on routes leading to summits. For example, the Drumkeeragh Forest Park loop primarily uses woodland tracks, offering a gentler experience underfoot.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the area?

Yes, Scrib has many options suitable for families and beginners. Over half of the trails in the region are rated as easy. A great choice is the Slievenaslat & Tea House loop — Mourne, which is a manageable walk with rewarding views and relatively little elevation gain.

Are dogs allowed on the trails?

Dogs are generally welcome on the trails around Scrib, but they should be kept on a lead, especially on open hillsides where livestock may be grazing. Woodland paths are great for walking with dogs, but always be mindful of local signage and wildlife.

Where can I find the most scenic viewpoints?

For panoramic views, the summits are the main attraction. On a clear day from the top of the hills, you can see across the surrounding counties and out to the coast. The Dundrum Coastal Path via Dundrum Castle — Mourne also offers beautiful scenery along the shoreline and views of the historic castle.

Are there any challenging hikes in Scrib?

The trails in Scrib are primarily rated as easy to moderate, making the area very accessible. While you won't find technically difficult or expert-level climbs, routes like the Slieve Croob Summit Path – Slieve Croob Summit loop from Dromara Hills offer a more energetic hike with a significant ascent, providing a good challenge for those looking for a workout.

What should I pack for a hike in Scrib?

Sturdy walking shoes or boots are essential, as paths can be uneven and muddy. The weather can change quickly, so waterproof clothing is highly recommended, even on sunny days. Also, bring water and snacks, as there are few facilities on the trails themselves. A map or a charged phone with the komoot app is also a good idea.

When is the best time of year to hike here?

Hiking is possible year-round, but the best conditions are typically from late spring to early autumn (May to September) when the weather is milder and the days are longer. The views are especially clear after a rain shower. Winter hiking can be beautiful but requires extra care due to potentially slippery paths and shorter daylight hours.

Is there parking available at the trailheads?

Yes, most popular trailheads have designated parking areas. For example, the main route up The Skirrid (often called Scrib) starts from a National Trust car park. It's advisable to arrive early on weekends and holidays as these car parks can fill up quickly.

Can I get to the trails using public transport?

Accessing the trailheads via public transport can be challenging as many are in rural locations with limited service. Driving is generally the most convenient way to reach the main starting points for hikes in the Scrib area.
