The municipality of Arth lies on the southern shore of Lake Zug in a valley between the Rossberg and the Rigi. Its territory extends over an area of 4,858 hectares, a portion of which includes Lake Zug. Approximately 26 percent of the municipal area is covered by cultivated land and approximately 30 percent by forest; the remaining area is used for settlements and transport infrastructure. Early tourist destinations on Mount Rigi included the pilgrimage and spa town of Rigi-Kaltbad, founded in the 17th century, and the pilgrimage destination "Maria zum Schnee" (Our Lady of the Snows) near the mountain chapel on Mount Rigi, from which the spa town of Rigi-Klösterli developed. In the late 18th century, tourist traffic to the mountain began, and in 1816, Martin Bürgi built the first inn on Rigi-Kulm.[42] In the 19th century, additional hotels began operating on the mountain, which were easily accessible by cable car from Vitznau in 1871 and from Arth in 1873. On July 23, 1969, a team from Arth-Goldau won the international third round of Spiel ohne Grenzen (Game Without Borders). The game was played in Caserta, Italy. This was the first victory for a Swiss team in this TV show, which was very popular in the 1960s and 1970s.
