🚲✨ The Posten 46 Schutzhütte on the Radbahn Münsterland cycle path is a wonderfully rustic resting place that offers cyclists and hikers a very special experience. You will find this stop in the picturesque section near Horstmar, nestled in the rolling hills of Steinfurter Land.

During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was besieged several times. Finally, the famous Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen (also known as "Bomben-Bernd") had the castle blown up and demolished in 1655, so that it could no longer serve as a base for enemy troops. 💥🧱

🚲✨ Horstmar Castle was once the proud center of power for the Prince-Bishops of Münster and the origin of the development of the present-day "City of Castle Mansions". Even though the actual main castle no longer stands in its full glory today, its historical presence can still be clearly felt on every corner of the city center.

It is the only surviving of the formerly four city gates and a real rarity in Westphalia. It connects the Sendenhof with the former castle grounds and is reminiscent of the city's strategic importance as a fortress. 🛡️🚪

Here too please 🙏. The photos belonging to the highlights are okay but the photos of the road or the meadow have nothing to do with the highlight (here the castle). You can also delete photos that have nothing to do with the highlight ☝️. For info: See the Komoot rules.

🚲✨ The Castle Gate (Burgtor): This is the only one of the four city gates that has survived the centuries. It is a true unique in Westphalia! The gate formerly formed the northern passage of the city fortifications and led directly to Horstmar Castle, about 500 meters away. Today it forms a structural unit with the Sendenhof, the smallest of the preserved castle manors. A look through the archway lets you feel the connection between the city and the castle (now only visible as a hill) directly.
