The Dutch Cheese Museum is located in the center of the cheese town of Alkmaar in the listed weighing house. The museum, founded in 1983, is dedicated to the production of dairy products through the centuries, trade and life in the country. The collection includes historical objects used in the production of dairy products, film and image material and paintings (including 24 portraits of Dutch women from the 16th century). In 2014, the museum was reorganized in a modern way and is therefore also very suitable for children. The museum is wheelchair accessible.

DISCOVER WHAT TO DO IN ALKMAAR Be surprised by these special events, activities and cultural must-sees in Alkmaar. And all in the beautiful historic city center. Enjoy these highlights! CHEESE MARKET Thousands of visitors from all over the world come to Alkmaar specifically for the cheese market. It is therefore a special spectacle with a square full of cheese and cheese carriers lugging it. In 1365 Alkmaar was granted the right to weigh and a scale, but by 1612 there were already four of them. When the first actual cheese market took place is a mystery. Old documents have been found that state with certainty that the cheese market took place in 1622. However, there is also evidence that the guild of cheese carriers was founded in 1593, which suggests that there was already a cheese market at that time. From April to September the cheese market takes place every Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
