Klein Castle Deurne

Highlight • Castle

In the stream valley of the Bakelse Aa or Vlier a square keep was built on the east side of the Haageind before 1383, which was later named Old House, Small Castle and Old Castle. During the same period, a water mill on the Bakel Aa north of the Klein Kasteel was also built. This castle served as the residence of Mr van Deurne, owner of the glory.

To the east of the Klein Kasteel lay haylands in the valley of the Bakel Aa. In 1454 these plots bore the names Sint-Kathelijnenbeemd and Vriezenbeemd. In the last decades of the 20th century, a park with a pond was created here for the Heiakker district, which had risen east of the Klein Kasteel.

Edit building history
The Klein Kasteel, which was still called Old House in the Middle Ages, was built as the successor of a residence on the Ter Vloet estate, located downstream along the Vlier in the hamlet of Kerkeind. The relocation upstream to the Haageind must have taken place in the second half of the 14th century. The Klein Kasteel nowadays consists of a 14th-century keep, a 17th or 18th-century low farm annex and an attached white manor house from 1857. During the renovation in 1857, the old lower court became a farm perpendicular to the building on the site of the mansion, and an extension of the medieval tower demolished. The mansion was built on the site of the old court. The access to the site, which previously ran through the Heerendijk (that is now the driveway of the water mill), was then shifted to the Haageind side. A fire on 24 September 1944 caused some damage, but could be put out by the then owner Pieter Wiegersma in time. [2]

Building plans for a detached guesthouse behind the Klein Kasteel were unanimously rejected in 2008 by Deurnese politics on the basis of archaeological and cultural-historical considerations, although the zoning plan allows an extension. [3] In 2010 a new plan for a guesthouse at the Klein Kasteel was drawn up. Deurnian politics has not yet decided on this. [4]

Edit Property History
Gevaert Willemszoon van Doerne is the oldest known lord of Deurne who lived there with certainty, around 1380-1390. [5] Until the early 16th century, the Klein Kasteel was the residence of the lords of Deurne, successively the genera Van Doerne (until 1456), De Mol and Taije. At the beginning of the 16th century, the glory and the Klein Kasteel of the Taije family were bought by the owner of the Groot Kasteel, Everard Hendrickszoon van Doerne, a distant cousin of the former Van Doerne's at the Klein Kasteel. After his death, the eldest son received the Groot Kasteel and the glory, making the Groot Kasteel from now on the residence of the glory. The Klein Castle belonged to a younger son. Later it ended up in the hands of various individuals and local administrators; from the end of the 18th century to 1948 it was once again the property of the lords of Deurne. They rented it out to countless private individuals, including several soldiers with their families in the French period. The best-known tenant was undoubtedly Otto van Rees, who lived there between 1923 and 1927 and inspired Hendrik Wiegersma to paint.

In 1948 it was sold by Theodore baron de Smeth van Deurne to Wiegersma, who made it available to his son Pieter Wiegersma, glazier. Wiegersma Jr. lived there since 1942 and later took over the ownership of his father. The northern extension was used as a studio during this period. In 1999 it was purchased by the Nooijen brothers. It now has a representative function and is not inhabited. The site is not accessible; however, the Klein Kasteel is clearly visible from the public road.

List of owners Edit
Below is a list of the owners of the Klein Kasteel, who borrowed this loan from the lord of Cranendonck. After 1795, when the loan system was abolished, it is only about the actual ownership. Until 1728 and between 1785 and 1948, the list almost corresponds to the list of men and women of Deurne. From 1526, however, they resided at the Groot Kasteel, their most prestigious property. The Klein Kasteel was rented out most of the time between 1526 and 1728, and between 1785 and 1948. [1]

Gemert Castle is one of the village's most striking historical buildings. The complex dates back to the 13th century and was owned for centuries by the Teutonic Order, which had its commandery here. Because of this long history, you'll find a mix of architectural styles on the grounds: medieval elements, an impressive gateway, later residential wings, and a moat that encircles the entire complex. The castle itself is not freely accessible, but from the road and surrounding paths, you have a beautiful view of the walls, towers, and gatehouse. The surrounding area is charming, with old tree-lined avenues, water features, and historic outbuildings that complete the setting. It's a pleasant place for walkers to stop and take a photo or soak up the tranquil atmosphere around the moat.

The castle is currently being renovated. A 5-star Hilton hotel is being built. There will be apartments for sale (starting at €1 million). The restaurant GEM, featuring Michelin-starred chef Soenil Bahadoer, recently opened. Everything is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
