De geschiedenis van de Westernboerderij De eersten pentekening dateert uit 1721 van Maximileaan de Raet, hierop is Huis de Baerle te zien met stallen. Echter is er van het Kasteeltje is niets terug te vinden, het huis en stallen bestaan nog steeds en zijn gemeentelijk monument. Destijds was het een boerderij met wat vee en gewassen, in de jaren 20 is de Baerle gekocht door de familie Hoogveld uit de Betuwe. Het gezin wilde in de Liemers boomgaarden aanleggen en fruit verkopen. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan, echter zoon Jan had een hobby, paarden! Deze hobby nam steeds serieuzere vormen aan en uiteindelijk moesten de boomgaarden wijken voor graslanden voor de paarden. In 1972 is er de eerste overdekte manege gebouwd van de regio. De opening werd door de burgermeester te paard verricht. Begin jaren 90 ontstond er het eerste contact tussen Jan Hoogveld en de familie Niels uit Doesburg. De dochter van de familie Niels had eveneens de hobby pony’s en paarden en begon met lessen op de manege van Jan Hoogveld. Jan was vrijgezel, kwam al op leeftijd en kon al het werk op de manege niet meer goed aan alleen. Langzamerhand kwam er hulp van verschillende kanten en ook Doreen en Trees Niels hielpen Jan bij de manege met allerlei hand en span diensten. Op een gegeven ogenblik vroeg Jan Hoogveld aan Peter Niels of hij de manege niet wilde kopen voor zijn dochter Doreen. De Manege werd gekocht en opgeknapt, de lessen waren goed gevuld en de kantine ook! De familie Niels was ook de uitbater van de IJsselhoeve in Doesburg. De link met horeca en manege was al redelijk snel gemaakt en in 1999 werd de grote schuur omgebouwd tot Saloon voor groepen. Een stuk buiten terrein werd klaargemaakt voor de activiteiten programma’s en de Westernboerderij was een feit. In 2008 heeft Richard Niels, de zoon van Peter & Trees Niels de Westernboerderij gekocht en verder uitgebouwd tot een bekende en alom gewaardeerde locatie voor groepen.
